The easiest way to the WSOP ever?

Access to 88 chances to win a $1.5M WSOP package!!

Here's the deal: If you don't have a Pacific Poker account yet, then you should download a special version of the poker software that comes with a helpful bankroll management feature for free which will help you learn all there is to know about how to keep the money flowing in the right direction. How cool is that!

And it might be a good idea to start practicing because: - From the 8th of February onwards there will be 8 ways to get yourself one of the 88 WSOP tickets which could make you $1.5 million!

What's great about our offer is that anyone can win a WSOP package, from the poker pro to the complete poker novice.  Existing members should not worry, there is so much to experience in the coming months. If you're curious about what's going to happen, here's your summary:

Members can win one of a massive 88 WSOP packages via their choice of no less than 8 different ways, which range from a simple status points race to a refer-a-friend route. There's a way for tournament lovers, one for those who like the occasional spin on the slots between poker games and another for the hardcore, persistent poker player.

The 8 ways:

·         Persistence Pays: Race to play the most raked hands

·         Race Your Way: Race to earn the most poker Status Points

·         Bring Your Buddies: Refer as many friends as possible

·         Tourney Lovers: Race to play the most tourneys with the biggest buy-ins

·         One For The Ladies: Ladies only race to earn the most poker Status Points

The Social Success way gives YouTube, Facebook and Twitter fans the chance to win a package using their favourite social networking site, making it less about your skills as a poker player and more about opening the WSOP doors to everyone. (Check the tools below this article!)

After Leo Margets' success at last year's WSOP, where she won the Last Woman Standing award and finished 27th out of 6,000, pocketing over $352,000, we from pokerinfo.com are keen to encourage the ladies to play their way to the WSOP too with their One For The Ladies way.

One good hand is all it takes to knock out poker playing celebs Leo Margets and Shane Warne in the Bounty Hunter way, which also leads to the WSOP and gives you a 'practice run' before you get there.

All 8 ways give you the chance to win a WSOP package instantly. Aaand it doesn't stop here! What's nice about our promo is you also get a second chance. Players ranking up to 700th in some cases automatically qualify for a freeroll or subfreeroll where there are even more WSOP packages up for grabs.

$5 Ocean Poker buy in with $500 added!

Dear all,

Sometimes we promote a new pokerroom. We would only do this if we have good reasons for it. Here's a good reason for you: Especially and only for our community, PokerOcean has organised a $5 buy-in tournament named Duckyroll with $500 added!

This is one of our largest private buy-ins ever! So imagine, if we have 100 players then there will be 100 x $5 + $500 = $1.000 in the pot! This should be a good tournament to start the Saturday evening with. If you win you'll have a very nice budget for a night out ... or actually two nights out...

Anyway, in order to participate you'll need to download the software (don't forget to use the DUCKYOCEAN bonuscode for some additional 100% depositing bonus!!!) and then sign up for our forum. Half an hour before the tournament starts you'll get the password for this tournament in your personal mailbox when you sign in at the forum.

We wish you all good luck!!

Bankroll Management

One of the most important things in poker is to have a good management of your bankroll. Players who have a good bankroll management will never go bankrupt, and will slowly work themselves up in the various limits. If you, however, play on limits which are not really suitable for your bankroll, one bad beat can cost you a big part of your bankroll. That eventually can make you tilt and lose your whole bankroll.
Players who have a good bankroll management will always play for a small percentage of their bankroll, thus if they do have bad luck sometimes, they don't get in trouble with their full finances, and can even keep playing on the same limits. Once you'll have a good bankroll management you will only laugh about bad beats, because you're realizing yourself you're a winning player in the end anyway.

The higher the limits you play, the bigger the swings are. That makes sense of course, as the opponents will play better and more aggressive, the higher the levels are.

To make it easy for you we have made an overview (please see below) which will give you an estimation of which limits are suitable for your bankroll. It also shows you when you can move up a limit or when you should move down.

Using the overview below, you will probably never have to move down and eventually play on higher limits, every once in a while. It enables you to take some time to get used to each higher limit whenever you move up. As a result, playing itself will be much more relaxed, because even if you lose your complete buy-in during one game, it is just a small percentage of your bankroll and thus won't do that much harm. This will help you in your decision making, which of course is good for your win rate

ROI

Return on Investment

If you're planning on playing many sit-and-go's (SNG's), then, just as with
regular cash-tables, it's important to keep track on your average profit. (or even better just swap: When planning on playing many sit-and-go's (SNG's), it's important to keep track on your average profit, just as with regular cash-tables)
However, you cannot use the number of big bets per 100 hands, as you
normally do at these kinds, of cash-tables.
Instead you use the so called "return on investments" (ROI) to determine how you did.
To calculate your ROI you divide your total profit by the total amount of buy-ins for all SNG's you played for a fixed buy-in.
An ROI of 0% means you broke even, a negative ROI means a loss and a positive ROI equals profit.
Your goal is therefore to get as high of an ROI as possible!

To make it easy to track your ROI, use an excel spreadsheet.

Click on the link below to download an example spreadsheet (Thanks to Pzyko from the Dutch forum!).

Click here to see an example excel sheet to download (thanks to Pzyko!)

Next to all this, it is of course important to use wise bankroll management.
You need the following bankrolls to adjust for the normal fluctuations of low buy-in SNG's.

Buy-in Minimal bankroll :

$5 $150
$10 $250
$20 $500
$30 $750
$50 $1250
$100 $2500

To get a reliable ROI , you have to play at least 100 SNG's with a fixed buy-in.
ROI's are not completely reliable , especially when you're just starting, since you
will obviously learn more while you play many SNG's.
Before you raise your buy-in, you should have a minimal ROI of 25% over the last 100
SNG's or 20 % over the last 300.
Obviously your bankroll should meet the minimal requirements of the above.

The higher the stakes, the better your opponents will be.
An ROI of more than 35% is considered very good.
An ROI of 50% is generally seen as the absolute maximum and is considered reachable if you play extremely well.
On SNG's with a higher buy-in than $100 this becomes virtually impossible.
a lower ROI on such games means a lot more money though in absolute terms ->
(50% of $50 = $25 , 25% of $200 = $50).

Try to build up your ROI's on the lower buy-ins to 35%, before you move on to higher buy-ins.
If you move on to $200 buy-in SNG's, you have probably figured out what's wise and what's not by then!

But remember: You want to have an ROI of 10% on $10 SNG's, rather than a 0% ROI on the $200 ones!

Pokeroffice

PokerOffice is a handy tool for playing poker online. It enables you to review not only your own game but that of your opponents too. It does this whilst in play, without you having to do anything.
PokerOffice saves all gathered data and converts it to statistical reports, spreadsheets and graphs.

Also it calculates the best possible hand (nuts) , the pot odds and it advises you to play the hand or fold and more nifty information like that.
More than 50 sites are covered by PokerOffice.

Functionalities of PokerOffice:

The Pokeroffice Statistics section.
All gathered data is summarized in clear statistical reports, spreadsheets and graphs, not only of your play, but also of that of your opponents. check here to see how many times you play certain hands, how many times you call the flop and with what hands you were successful.

The PokerOffice Live Advisor Window.
This window logs real-time with what kind of player you are dealing with and the probabilities and chances that a certain opponent had with certain hands.
For each opponent individually it shows hand rankings, Pot odds and statistics.

Manual

Introduction
Firstly and above all, we would like to make clear that of course {PokerInfo} cannot guarantee that you will win when using the online advisor! This program only gives a suggestion about what you could do BEFORE the flop, which is of course a very important part of the poker game. We do not guarantee any profits! The advisor is mainly programmed to give the beginner more feel about the game before the flop. Once again, we do not guarantee anything nor do we take any responsibilities for the outcome of your poker game!!

Furthermore, the advisor is written to be used only with Texas Holdem Limit Shorthand!

The advisor works as follows:

Enter your card, position and bets, and press "Calculate suggestion". The advisor will then calculate (taking into account a certain, in general winning strategy) whether you should fold, call, raise or re-raise. The advisor does not take into account if you are on the small or big blind. Of course, when the advise is to fold but you can check for free as well then check is the right thing to do.

Cards
Here you should enter the 2 cards you have in your hand:
1. Type in the symbols of the cards you have in the input field next to "cards".
2. If you have suited cards, also put in an "s" at the end.

Card symbols:
a = Ace
k = King
q = Queen
j = Jack
t = Ten
2 to 9 = 2 to 9

Examples:
aa = Two aces
ajs = Ace Jack suited
8t = An eight and a ten (not suited)
q2s = A queen and a two suited.

Position
In this input box you enter you position at the table (where you are sitting)

CO = cut-off, the last player before the button
Button = the player who is the dealer and the last to make a decision
UTG = under the gun, the player who has to be the first to make a decision
MP = mid-position, all other positions

Bet
In here you enter what bets are made by the other players

Opener = You are the first to bet, you are under the gun
1-2 Limpers = Two or more people have called the big blind
Facing a raise = Someone has already raised
Facing a re-raise = someone already re-raised

tip
You can keep the web page with the advisor open during playing poker, and switch quickly using the "tab" button.

Heads up (1 against 1)

If you play many tournaments or sit-and-go's you will frequently end up in a situation where there is only you and one other player left (by the way, this also happens from time to time at a normal cash table). The problem is that many people do not know how they should play in a situation like that. In this Article we try to give you a guide for heads up situations, because one thing is for sure: If you continue playing exactly the way you do at tables with several people, you will most certainly lose with heads up.

The heads up game is in fact very easy, especially if you play against a starting inexperienced player. Aggressive playing is normally already very important, however when playing heads up it is the one and only key to success. Therefore you should know the following two basic rules:

1. When you're on the button you should always raise.
2. Always bet on the flop in case you are first or when your opponent checks.

Bad players will give up too many pots which means you will slowly but steadily make them run out of chips until the point you can claim the victory. More experienced players however will respond aggressively, so you will also have to adapt your game to that. Against this type of opponents it can be successful to use a "bait-strategy". When you suspect your opponent of frequent bluffing then the best thing to do is only call in case you have a good hand and then eventually raise on the river. This is the best way to get as many chips as possible when playing against this type of opponents.

Furthermore it is important to remember that if you have a pair on the flop you statistically have the best hand, even in case it is the lowest pair possible. In this case you should raise when your opponent bets.

Limit 10 players

Introduction

Below we will give you a basic strategy which should enable you to earn money with longhand limit Texas Holdem at tables with 7 players or more. The strategy is intended for beginning players who play on the lower limits (maximum $1/$2).

Just to be sure one more time:
a = Ace
K = King
Q = Queen
J = Jack
10,9,8,7,6,5,4,3 and 2 = Speaks for itself
x = a random card
s = "suited" which means that the cards are of the same suit/figure, for example they are all hearts or all diamonds.
bet = Make a bet/commitment
raise = Make a higher bet than the bet required, in other words to raise the bet
re-raise = raise a bet after it has already been raised
call = Go along with the bet/raise of your opponent
button = Place at the table from where the cards are dealt
flop = The first three cards to appear on the table
river = The fifth and last card to appear on the table
draw = The chance of a card on the table with which you could end up with a good hand (for example end up with a street/flush or higher)

Starting hands before the flop

The most important moment when playing longhand limit Texas Holdem is the selection of the starting hands which you want to play before the flop. Most beginning players start loosing money straight away because of the simple reason that, they play too many hands. For example, many beginning players play each hand with an 'a' before the flop, whereas this is absolutely loss-making in the long run. Patience and discipline are the most important skills to become a winning player at longhand limit Texas Holdem. In fact, it is simply a matter of waiting for the right hands. In that way making money in the long run will be way easier.

Hand categories

Which hands should be played and which not? The hands can roughly be classified in 4 categories:

1. Top hands
AA, KK, QQ, JJ, AK, AKs and AQs.
These are the very best hands. With these hands you should always raise or re-raise before the flop (except of course when you think that your opponent has AA or KK whereas you have AK). There are two reasons for this. The first reason is that you want to have as much money as possible in the pot because you most likely have the best hand. The second and most important reason is that you want to get people with less good hands out of the pot. This way you sort of protect your hand in that manner (or in other words: the fewer people in the pot, the lower the risk that an opponent has or will end up with a better hand). Remember, however, that in case you have, for example, an AK you still need an additional a or K on the flop. Therefore, do not re-raise endlessly if you do not have a pair already. Also pay attention when you have KK and an a appears on the flop. The chance then is that someone else has AA, especially in case many players stayed in the pot before the flop (didn't fold after the first round of betting).

2. Good hands
1010, 99, AQ, AJ, AJs, KQ and KQs.
These are good hands but they are not very good. In general you need some help to win. When you have 1010 or 99 on low limits you almost always need another 10 or 9 to get three of a kind in order to win. a low pair is in most cases not enough. Nevertheless you should also always play these hands. Furthermore it is also favorable in this case to have as few players in the pot as possible, so you should again force people out of the pot by raising. On the other hand you should also limit the amount of money you put in the pot before the flop, because the hand you have has relatively low value, before you've seen the flop. So in case someone already has raised and someone else already has re-raised, you should fold. You then have no more advantage before the flop because someone else probably has a better hand.

It is important to remember that when playing limit you want to have an advantage before the flop with respect to the other players. Once again: before the flop! In case there has been only one raise and you're in a late position it is also possible to just call. Exception is when a player in early position has already raised. In that case he probably has a top hand (first category) which makes it more sensible for you to fold.

3. Reasonable hands
88, A10s, A10, KJ, KJs, QJs, QJ, and J10s.
These hands are ok but no more than that. Generally you will not win with these hands. In this situation you have to watch out for people with a high kicker (= high second card in your hand). Reasonable hands are very vulnerable for high kickers (for example AK against AJ and then there appears an a on the table). In case these cards are suited you can play them more often, especially in case there are many players in the pot. When having reasonable hands the position and the behavior of the other players is very important (it's always important but in this case even more important than usual). In case, for example, if many players raise you should definitely fold. In case everyone folds and you are in a good position, you can raise.

4. Marginal hands
Axs, Kxs (only 9 or higher), 77, 66, Q10s, 109s, 98s, 87s and 76s.
Generally speaking, you will not win with marginal hands, however they are profitable in the long run because in case you hit a good flop and you win, you are likely to win a very big pot (for example, in case you get a street or a flush)! Therefore, you should only play these hands in case there is a pot with at least 5 other players in it and nobody has raised before the flop.

All other hands should not be played
Yes, this also means you should not play A9 or 55 and lower!!
The reason for this is that, although some of these hands can be slightly profitable, for the beginning player in the long run the margins will be simply too small. You have to be a really good player to be able to recognize the margins and to then also realize them. Therefore playing these hands will probably lead to a lower profit or even a loss. In case you want to play these hands anyway, then at least only play them when there are many players in the pot and when nobody has raised before the flop.

After the flop

After the flop, 4 situations can be distinguished:

1. You have nothing
This is the most simple situation. In case you do not hit anything on the flop you should fold (unless of course nobody raises, which means you can see the next card for free).
Example: you have 109s, flop is AK3, there are 5 people in the pot and someone raises. In this case you should fold.

2. You have a good hand
This is quite a common situation. You probably have the best hand however your hand is easy to beat. Think, for example, about a situation in which you have a top pair with a top kicker or an over pair. You should in this case raise in order to get as much money as possible in the pot and as many people as possible (who still might have a winning draw) out of the pot. In case someone raises over you (re-raise) and after that someone else raises that as well (re-re-raise), you should fold. Someone else then probably has a three of a kind or higher.

3. You have a top hand
You have a three of a kind, a street, a flush or higher. In that case the situation is different. You still want to have as much money in the pot as possible, however there is no reason to raise other players out of the pot given that it is unlikely that you will loose. Only in case of a draw on a combination which is higher than what you have you should raise enough to scare other players out of the pot.

4. You have a draw
You have a chance on, for example, a street or a flush. When you're in this situation you will have to calculate odds with respect to the pot in order to know whether or not you should call. For more information about this please check our article about pot odds.

So that was the basis! Yeah, in fact it's actually quite simple! Just remember that the more people are in the pot, the more likely someone else has better cards than you do or the more likely that someone else has the nuts (= best hand possible). Just pay attention to that! In case you have, for example, AK and the flop is AQQ, you should be way more careful when there are still 5 players in the pot, than in case there's only one left. In case a lot of players raised before the flop you're probably beaten and thus you should fold even with AK!!

No Limit 10 players

The best way to earn money with poker is by playing (good) no-limit Texas Holdem. When playing limit, good players can expect a positive result of 2-4 big blinds per hour. At no-limit this hourly return can be way higher. The reason for this is that, because you can bet all your money in one game (put all your money in one pot), bad players will loose way more heavily because of their bad game. Difference in the value of hands with respect to limit When playing NL you should play different cards before the flop. Good and reasonable hands with exception of pocket pairs and suited connectors, such as KQ and QJ decrease in value because at no-limit it is more dangerous to play them. This is because just like with playing limit, in case you get a pair with such cards on the flop, you still have a pretty big chance of losing (three of a kind, over-pair, two pair, higher kicker or draw). However, the difference to limit is that with no-limit you can then immediately lose all your money!
This does not mean that you should not play these cards. You should just be way more careful after the flop. If you hit top pair, you want to get the pot immediately on the flop because you do not want to give someone else an additional draw/chance to improve his/her hand. Therefore, you should raise considerably (approximately the pot). If then someone else re-raises you should fold (except of course in case you know for sure that the person is bluffing). When playing this way you'll know immediately what you can expect.
This rule obviously does not apply if you get a top hand on the flop (for example QQ7 whereas you have AQ). In that case you should try to get as much money as possible in the pot, because the chance that you will be beaten is very small.

Hands which increase in value with respect to limit are pocket pairs (for example 88) and suited connectors (for example 76s). These hands are good to play or even to raise. In case you get an over pair or three of a kind on the flop you can raise or re-raise. In general other players do not expect these cards and therefore these hands will be very profitable when you have them. The same goes for suited connectors. These cards are also fantastic at No Limit. Imagine you have 98s and the flop hits A98. People with, for example, AK will then considerably pay out to you. Another way to win the pot is by semi-bluffing. For example you have 98 and the flop is A76. In case you would then raise, people will think you have an a and call or fold depending on their own hand. You then have a chance of winning the pot immediately on the flop (when everybody folds) or you have a draw on a hand which your opponents do not expect. In case for example a 10 and an a fall on the turn and river, people with an a might call an all-in and thus loose all their money to you. Betting when playing NL It is very important to know how much you must bet when playing no limit. The best approach is to try to win as much money as possible by loosing as little money as possible at the same time. If, for example, you think that your opponent has a draw, you should bet enough money in order to get the odds of the opponent's (trade off between how much it costs to see the next card to the chance of winning and how much the amount will be in case you win) turn bad. If the opponent then calls your bet anyway and you loose you should not worry. It will mean that the opponent will loose money to you in the long run anyway because he creates loosing odds for himself!
On the other hand you should not bet too much either, given that it will make you very vulnerable to people with a better hand. As a rule of thumb you should bet the pot in case you have a good hand (top pair or better). Do not use the bet-the-pot-anyway-easy-fast-decision button which many poker sites have. Always look very careful to what other people do at any time and do not forget to take into account the position you're in!!

Another example: You have 77 and the flop is A76. You should in that case bet the pot (approximately). The reason for this is that people who will call your bet probably have an 'a' or 'a' straight draw. By betting the pot you make the draw for your opponents too expensive with regards to the odds. People with an 'a' will probably call anyway so in this manner you will make money from players with an a and reduce risk because you've raised people with a straight draw (which is better than what you have) out of the pot.

Bluffing when playing NL In order to be able to value how effective a bluff is at a table, you should look at how frequently people show their cards after the river (the number of showdowns). a high number of showdowns in general means that bluffing will be less effective, because in that case people at the table tend to call you until the river. Consider this as a rule and take this into account before you start bluffing!

In case you're at a table where everybody constantly calls, you can earn your money by always betting the pot in case you have a good hand. In the long run that will almost automatically be profitable!

No Limit 6 players

Introduction

These days most money is earned with playing No Limit. Good Limit players earn between 2 to 4 times the big bets per 100 hands they play, whereas Good No Limit Players earn many many times more. Therefore it is a good idea to try to become a 'Good No Limit' player. Below we lay out a basic strategy for shorthand (6 players max) Texas No Limit, which is by far the most popular No Limit poker game. After you've mastered this strategy you can expect to earn between 5 to 15 big bets per every 100 hands you play. So when playing 4 NL100 ($0.50/$1) tables at the same time, you should easily earn about $50 an hour if you follow the strategy below!

When you're a beginning player it is best to play tight aggressive, just like when playing Limit. Playing "tight" should be interpreted as playing only good hands and playing "aggressive" should be interpreted as in case you play a hand you should bet and raise a lot. Below we will explain to you how to play in order to be a good tight aggressive player at the NL6 max tables. These strategies work when playing limits of NL10 ($0.05/$0.10) to NL400 ($2/$4). When playing above NL400 the players will be better, which means that more knowledge is required, in order to still be profitable. For this we refer to our article about NL on higher limits for the more experienced players.

Once again to be sure:
a = Ace
K = King
Q = Queen
J = Jack
10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3 and 2 = speaks for itself
x = a random card
s = suited, the cards are of the same suit for example they are all diamonds

Strategy

Firstly and above all: The most important thing when playing NL, which is even way more important than when playing Limit, is that you are very much aware of your position at the table! In other words: That you are aware of when it is your turn to make a move. The button and the position before that (the cut-off) are the best positions at the table. The reason for that is because at these positions you are the last to make a decision. At the button or cut-off you will see what your opponents decide to do (fold, call or raise), before you have to decide for yourself. This gives you a superior position with respect to your opponents. in other words the button and the cut-off are the positions at the table which are by far the most profitable. This should be very clear to you! You always have to be very much aware of why these positions are extremely important at NL!

Second point is that you should NEVER EVER call when you're the first to make a decision. You should always either fold or raise. Calling is for losers! Calling when being the first to make a decision is one of the worst mistakes you can make when playing NL 6 max. Don't ever do this! raise of fold!

Button and cut-off position

When you're at the button / cut-off position you can consider yourself the bouncer of the table (J). In that position it is you who decides whether the blinds are allowed to enter the table for free or not. And why would you let them play there cards for free given that they are in a bad position? Exactly! Therefore, you should always abuse the power of the button / cut-off position and raise (just like those bouncers always abuse their position at the club ). Good tight aggressive players understand this very well and abuse the power of the button / cut-off as often as possible. a good tight aggressive player raises the following hands at the button / cut-off in case everyone before him folds: All pocket pairs, all As, all suited connectors, all high cards A10 and better like for example KJ or QJ etc. Some more experienced players even raise any Ax in case all players before him have folded.

The reasons why you should do this are because:

1. You steal the blinds in case everybody folds (in the long run this is more profitable than you think and for many players this is even a big part of their earnings).
2. In case some players call, you will play a bigger pot in a better position than the rest. Even when you hit nothing at the flop you are likely to win the pot in case you bet again (make a continuation bet).
3. In case you haven't raised (which you should have) and you hit a three of a kind (set) at the flop you will probably not win that much because the pot is still small and that is not a good thing because hands like three of a kind are of major importance for your earnings in the long run when playing NL.
4. People tend to loose all their chips (total stack) more easily when there's a bigger pot in which has been raised compared to when there's a smaller pot in which there has not been raised. When there's a bigger pot they will tend to bluff more and thus hand over their money to you.

Example 1:
The first player (under the gun) calls the big blind. All other players fold. You have 2 of spades2 of diamonds and you're on the button. What should you do?
Answer: You should raise. a raise of 4-5 times the big blind is good.

Example 2:
You're on the button and you get 4 of hearts4 of clubs. under the gun (UTG) calls the big blind, a player in middle position calls as well and the rest folds. What should you do?
Answer: raise!

In case other players call and you do a continuation bet (c-bet) you will win the pot often enough to make it profitable. You should c-bet in 75%-90% of the time. In case your opponents haven't flopped anything they will most likely fold, so when your opponent checks you should raise!!
When in position it is often a good idea to re-raise at the flop in case you have a flush draw at the turn. This is because you can then "check-behind" at the turn in order to get a free card.

So now you know what to do when you're at the button or cut-off. Being under the gun (UTG) or at middle position is a totally different story:

Under the gun (UTG)

When being UTG you should play extremely tight. You should fold suited connectors, high cards and Axs. They only thing you should raise are pocket pairs.

Actually, you should raise pocket pairs in any position. This because they have a chance of flopping such good hands (three of a kind or more) that you can almost never fold them because of their potential. So raising pocket pairs is standard! Those are the cards to play someone else broke when you hit a three of a kind. You should never call with a pocket pair! It is too obvious that a weak tight player (who thinks he/she is a tight aggressive player) has a pocket pair when he/she calls when being UTG and after that calls someone else his or her raise. That just shows the player at the UTG position has a pocket pair (which appears to be true in 95% of the occasions).
Also keep raising with a AJ or better. Folding KQ, KJ, QJ is not bad playing given that these hands are not that good in this position!

Middle position

When being in middle position (MP) you can still fold KQ, KJ or QJ though you will have to play slightly less tight. Start with raising an Axs and suited connectors now and then in order to vary your game.

When being in the blinds you should play very tight. When you call too many raises out of position you will loose money. You don't want to play pots which are too big when you're in the blinds with marginal hands. Fold suited connectors, Axs and other high cards and call any pocket pair.
And another thing: The fact that you play tight does not mean you should play like a cowardJ. In case the button/ cut-off/ or middle position raises, you can re-raise with hands like AK, AQ, JJ, 1010 etc. Re-raising with cards like these at the blinds is way better than calling which is what most other players would do. Re-raising with these hands is beginning to become more advanced poker playing so you should be very careful. Beginning players who start to re-raise often loose their stack because they play out of position and therefore do not play good enough after the flop.

Example 3:
You are in the big blind (BB) or small blind (SB) position with ace of diamondsqueen of spades. UTG calls, MP calls and button calls. What should you do?
Answer: raise. Raise 6-7 times the big blind dependant on the number of opponents. Getting the pot right now without seeing the flop is way better than checking and playing a non-raised multi way-pot.

The fact that you should raise with hands like the example above is because in that way you'll get the chance to play for big pots against players who do not have any idea about position and the advantages of it. You win their stack more often than vice versa. Also do not hesitate too much with making continuation bets (c-bets). You should do this in 75%-90% of the occasions, depending on the flop. Only in cases where more than two players call and you've totally missed the flop you can decide to fold or check and give up the pot.

Example 4:
You have ace of spades8 of spades and you're on the button. UTG calls. You raise 5 times the BB, the BB calls and so does UTG. The flop is 4 of spades8 of heartsqueen of clubs. What should you do?
Answer: you should bet 100% in case everyone else checks.

OK then, these were the basics of position playing. If you master this totally and you integrate it slowly but steady in you game, you will eventually become a winning player at the NL 6 max tables. Good luck!

Common poker bloopers

Common poker bloopers

The most common poker bloopers in a row.

Calling until the river without having anything in your hands. Many players hope to improve their hand at the turn or the river, which happens rarely (and even then it is possible that someone else shows a better combination). Weak player

Overestimating your hand. Playing with an Ace and a low kicker (For example A2 is a pretty weak hand. Other players with an Ace very likely to have a better kicker than a Two). Entertainment player

Bluffing too much. a killer. Someone that bluffs too much at the wrong moment will be defeated in the end. Beginning players think that bluffing is part of the game however they use the technique too many times in order to stay credible. a mistake you will have to pay for! Bluffer

Playing against too advanced opponents. When playing against an opponent that has won several bigger pots from you, the chance is pretty high that this opponent is able to "read" you. Don't try to win back your losses and leave the table. Some players really are too good to win from. Accept your loss and look for a table with weaker players. Entertainment player

Deciding too fast. Take your time and think through the possibilities of your opponent. Calling big bets too fast can be killing. Even though you think you have the best hand, always check if you haven't forgotten anything. And when checking too fast you indirectly show that you have a weak hand so never be too fast with checking either. Weak player & Maniak

Not choosing your moments properly Never call all-ins with minor hands like AJ or KQ. In case a player in an early position, with a bigger stack than you goes all-in then fold hands like AQ or 55. In the long run better hands will come by, so do not immediately put your total stack at risk. Weak player & Entertainment player

Wanting to see the flop with drawing hands. In case you'd go all-in once every five hands you will very likely never see the final table of a tournament. Raise with strong hands but do not immediately throw all your chips in the pot. Hands like AK are powerhouses, but if you do not hit anything you will loose from a pair of two's. Just be the smart player and raise in order to see the flop. When you hit a K, bet the pot. When your opponent then folds, just be happy with your small pot. Sometimes two of those pots are worth equally as one double-up, but then without the risk. Maniak

The rules of poker

Introduction

Below you'll find a short explanation of the rules for the most popular types of poker. We advise you to start with the variant called Texas Holdem and to continue with the alternatives once you're familiar with this type of poker.

Texas Holdem

These days Texas Holdem is by far the most popular poker game. It is very easy to learn, meaning you can start almost immediately with the actual game.

At Texas Holdem the cards are dealt from the player or person who holds a type of chip, called the button, in front of him/her on the table. After each round, the button moves clockwise to the next player. The two players on the left side of the button are obliged to bet the blinds before the cards of the next game are dealt. There is a distinction between the big blind and the small blind. The big blind is twice as high as the small blind. The player on the right of the button bets the small blind, the player next to him/her the big one. The blinds are the first monies that go into the pot.

In the next step the cards are dealt. Every player gets two cards which cannot be seen by the other players. Then the first round of betting starts. The player on the left of the blind is the first to say what he/she will do. After that all the other players get their turn clockwise, with the big blind being the last to make his/her decision. There are four possibilities to choose from: bet, check (pass), raise (raise) or fold (give up).

After the first betting round has been completed, three cards will appear open on the table which every player can use to combine with his/her own two cards. These three cards are called "the flop". After this a second betting round follows.

Then the fourth card, which is called "the turn", will appear on the table, followed by another betting round. From this round on, the bets are doubled at the limit-variant of Texas Holdem (in the limit-variant the betting are limited to a certain amount and it's not possible to go "all in"). Then the fifth and last card, which is called "the river", will be turned over on the table. Hereafter the last round of betting follows.

After the last betting round the remaining players show their hand, which is the best possible combination of their own two cards with three out of the five cards from the table (so best combination of five cards in total). The best hand wins the pot.

Omaha

Omaha differs from Texas Holdem, in the fact that in this version of poker each player gets four instead of two cards. Out of these four cards you combine two cards with three of the five cards from the table. It is very important to remember this!

Just like Texas Holdem, Omaha uses a button to indicate which player deals the cards and who has to bet the blinds. The betting rounds, flop, turn and river are also the same.

Omaha Hi/Lo

In this variation of Omaha poker the pot is divided in two equal parts. The highest hand (according to the normal rules) wins one half and the lowest hand the other.

There is not always a "lo" (low hand). For this you must have 5 cards which are 8 or lower. Furthermore you're not allowed to have two pair (or more) and you have to use two cards of your own hand and three of the table (just like for the "hi"). You are allowed to use the Ace as a 1 just like in case of a street. In case nobody has a "lo" the whole pot will go to the "hi". The best "lo's" are A2345, the worst 45678. Any random combination of 8 or lower cards will be enough for a "lo". a certain combination of cards like required for a "hi" is not needed for a "lo" (for example it doesn't need be a pair or a street). In case of equal "lo's" the "lo" part of the pot will be split up between the "lo's", which occurs quite frequently.

Seven card stud

The rules of Seven card stud are very different from the Holdem alternatives.

Each player gets two cards facing down (which no one can see) and a face up card (visible to all the other players). The player with the lowest open card has to start with the betting. In all following rounds the player with the best hand has to continue with the betting. In the following rounds each player gets another three facing up cards, always followed by a betting round. The last card is a closed card again, followed by a last betting round. Afterwards the remaining players show their 'face-down' cards.

Playing poker online

In this Article we lay out how to start playing poker online. The best way to start is by playing longhand limit Texas Holdem (Tables with 7 - 10 players are named "longhand", whereas tables with 6 players or less are named "shorthand"). We highly recommend that you first read our article about the basic strategy, so that you can start with earning money as soon as possible! Also our articles on tips for beginners and examples for beginners are highly recommended!

Due to the enormous popularity of poker you can find a lot of poker sites on the Internet. New poker sites are arising on a weekly basis. It is sensible to start at a large site which is known as good and save. Poker sites earn their money with the rake (= a small amount taken from the pot), therefore a good reputation is extremely important for them. Sophisticated and thoroughly checked software ensures that the cards are always shared honestly and the software is also able to pick out possible cheaters.
All online poker sites mentioned on this site are safe sites. As soon as we find out that a site is not safe we will let you know immediately and we will obviously also remove the poker site in question from our list. When you start, it might be a good idea to first read our reviews of all the poker sites available and then choose a site which is appropriate for you. Please do not forget to use the offered bonuses for free, extra playing money!

When starting to play poker online you first need to download the free software from the pokersite of your choice. After that you have to choose a name under which you will play on the site (= screen name) and you have to mention your e-mail address. Once you've done this you have your own poker-account, enabling you to play poker online whenever you want!

If you like, you can choose to first start playing with fake money (= play money) to practice. When playing with "play money", you can always go back to the cashier to get some more. Poker sites always supply unlimited "play money" to practice and this is all for free! The disadvantage of playing with "play money" is that, because fake money is unlimited and free, most players play really bad and different compared to when they would play with real money. Therefore, practicing with "play money" has only limited value when it comes to preparing for the real deal.

When you have practiced enough or in case you want to start immediately with playing for real money, you have to deposit an amount on your poker-account. The easiest and fastest way to deposit money on a poker-account is by using a credit card. Besides that, many poker players also have a Neteller-account (this is an online bank account). For more information about this you can check our article on Neteller-account.

When it's your first time we recommend that you do not deposit more than $25 or $50. This is enough when you start playing at the tables with the lowest limits. We recommend you to only participate on tables with higher limits once your money (your initial deposit) has doubled and once you're used to the game!
Bonus money!!

All online poker sites mentioned on this site offer a bonus for all new players coming from Pokertips.NL. So if you go from this site to one of the online poker sites we mention and you sign up for a new poker account, that poker site will give you an additional bonus to the deposit you've made! For example, if you deposit $50 most sites will give you at least another $25 (50% extra)! You then have straight away $75 on your bankroll! Some poker sites give more bonuses than others. For more information about this please check our overview of the poker sites we recommend.

Make $100k in a year

Make up to a $100.000 a year!

Here we'll show you how to make $100.000 in a year, just by playing NL — 6 (No Limit, 6 Players Max).
This only works for the more experienced player, 4 tables at once, NL 100 or higher and at least a couple of hours a day playing.

1. Play tight, aggressive poker! (TAG).

a good TAG player should have a VPIP, between 15 to 25% and a PFR, between 7 to 15%.
You can find that data in your poker tracker database.

2. Make good use of your table position.

Play tight in early position and raise most hands when you're in a late position.

3. re-raise strong hands pre-flop.

Hands to raise are AQ, AK and 1010 trough to AA, when someone raises before you.

4. Make continuous bets.

When you're positioned heads up after the flop and other players check, you should go in at least 85% of the time, make a continuous bet of about ?? of the pot.

5. Fold on a raise on the flop.

When someone raises on the flop, you should fold, unless you have a pretty good lead of at least aces.

6. raise/re-raise two pair + sets + combo draws on the flop.

Don't slow play!

7. In a raised pot, when you can beat a pair of aces, you've got something!

Assume you have the best hand and fold only if you encounter a lot of opposition.

8. Never drop strong hands.

When the times comes, you are sure you've been beaten, your odds will
have improved so much you can't afford to drop. So never drop a set.

If you apply these rules, you could make up to a $100.000 a year playing online poker.

The history of Poker

Basic principle

Poker is the most famous card game in the world. There are several variations of the game, however they all operate on the same basic level: Players place wagers into a central pot, which is then awarded to them should they hold the best hand of cards at the end. This type of game is called a vying game.

In 1829, an English actor by the name of Joseph Crowell reported about a type of vying game being played in the gambling houses and saloons of New Orleans. It involved 4 players betting on a deck of 20 cards, the most valuable winning. In this version of the game there was no "draw" and the range of combinations was limited. The ultimate unbeatable hand was 4 Aces, or 4 Aces and a King. This is different from the classic Poker of today, where the Royal flush can be matched with another suit.

The origin of the actual poker game

The actual poker game has since evolved from varying influences. Such as the Indian game Ganjifa, the German pochen, the Renaissance game of Primero, the English game of Bragg and even the early Persian game of As Nas. However, according to many dictionaries and game historians, the most likely origins lie with the French game Poque, as that game involved making bets and bluffing and as the word Poque itself is familiar to the word Poker. One theory is that the game of poker was developed by French settlers in New Orleans and that the southern accent anglicized the word Poque into the pronunciation of Pokuh, which then became Poker. Although Poque was originally played with 3 players and 32 cards, the game may well have been created within small communities who had knowledge already of the 20 card game (mentioned by Joseph Crowell, check previous paragraph).

The earliest written reference to poker was written in 1834 by an American named Jonathan H. Green. In 1813, Jonathan was born in Lawrenceburg, Indiana and by 1829, he had ran away from his employers, been thrown in jail and picked up extensive card playing habits. He is now famously known as the "reformed gambler" significant because he was the man who made one of the first references to the card game we know today, as poker. This happened in 1834, when he mentioned the rules of a game he called "the cheating game", a game at that time played on the river boats of the Mississippi. The "cheating game" was seen to be far more legitimate than the other popular card game of that time, which was called Three Card Monte. Players seem to come back, again and again, for more of the "cheating game". Some sources claim that Jonathan also was the one who gave this "cheating game" the name Poker. Other articles do not agree with this.
By the mid 1830's, the 20 card game started losing its footing to a similar game which was being played with a full 52 card deck. This may well have been to allow for more players at the table. Eventually the 20 card game faded away. The last remnants were being noted in 1857, where the author of a New York City guidebook mentioned it as "one of the most dangerous pitfalls to be found in the city". The 20 card game did not last and only warranted the briefest of mentions in the 1845 edition of Hoyle's Games, by Henry F. Anners.

To summarize, it can thus be stated; that although the origin of the word Poker might be European, the actual game itself evolved in America. Moreover, around 1875 the European influence on poker ended anyway, because around that time "the Joker" was introduced in Europe as a wild card on the card deck. This "Joker" was not considered suitable for poker and thus a difference between American and European decks of cards appeared. The above mentioned facts however are still too little to make a proven statement about the real origins of Poker. These origins are still varied and remain very much open to debate until this day.

The different variations and their popularity
Over hundreds of years, the game has evolved to such an extent that there are now many different variations, including draw, Five Card Stud, Seven Card Stud, Texas Holdem Poker and many others. Through-out the years three games have successively dominated poker: First it was draw, then (Five & Seven Card) Stud and finally Holdem. During first centuries these games were particularly popular as limit-betting games. Each type of poker game cornered over two thirds of the market during their ascendancy.

draw was the first dominating poker game. From the time that poker appeared until some time round the 1930's, draw was far ahead in popularity. What helped draw poker to become even more popular was the development in Nevada around the beginning of the 20th century. In 1910, Nevada made it a felony to run a betting game. However, the Attorney General of California declared that draw poker was based upon skill and therefore the anti gambling laws could not stop it. Stud poker (the main threat for the popularity of draw at that time) on the other hand was still illegal as it was based solely on chance. With the help of this law, draw poker games developed and grew even more popular, compared with the other types of poker.

Then with time, Nevada legally reversed itself, which finally led to legalization of casino gambling in 1931. This new law gave new chances to (Five and Seven Card) Stud poker. It took the lead very fast, thriving in the armed forces during WWII. Stud poker kept its position until the 80s.

After that Holdem became popular. The popularity of Holdem happened together with the rise of the Nevada casino industry in the fifties and sixties. It finally took over as the most popular poker game in the 80's. Apparently the main reason why Holdem overtook Stud poker was the huge leap in status it gained through being used as the world championship game since the early 70's. It was Benny Binion, who hosted the first ever World Series of Poker, allowing entry only to the best players in the world. Benny chose Holdem as the world championship game. Costs were $10,000 to buy in and there were no betting limits. The happening was a huge success and continues to be televised today. With this Benny is considered responsible for the merging of gambling with entertainment. The huge success of Holdem's shows that Benny made an excellent choice by making Holdem the world championship game. It is therefore expected that Holdem will stay being the most popular poker game for a very long time...

Nevertheless it is interesting to speculate how different things might have been today if No-Limit Seven Card Stud poker had been invented in 1960, instead of 1998... No-limit Holdem was unknown to the vast majority (probably over 95%) of spectators and players in the early 1970's, whereas Seven card stud was by far the most popular game. At that time, Seven card stud was considered by the majority of players to be the best poker game...

The future

Nowadays the poker game has been dominated by games based on seven live cards. It has been like this for most of the century now and there is no reason to expect that this will change. Poker is carefully regulated by gambling laws and it is played more than any other card game in the world. It has grown into a sporting event, with competitions and tournaments all around the world. Regardless of level, the variety and challenge of the game and all its forms, poker will continue to have a wide appeal to players, whether as a prospect of winning money or just for fun.

Poker will only become bigger and bigger and bigger...

Online Texas Holdem -A Poker Game Loved By All

If you are a regular casino player and you usually play some of the popular games when there then you will probably be familiar with the game Texas Holdem.

The game of Texas Holdem  is one of the most well known poker games which either beginners or advanced players enjoy. It is not just a game that is restricted to one country either as it is enjoyed online around the world.

With the different kinds of poker games that were in demand at the casinos, Texas Holdem was not really exposed in terms of popularity during the 20th century. But in the mid 2000's this poker game rapidly increased in popularity and attracted the attention of many gamblers

This was partially due to the game's exposure through television, internet and other media.
The Texas Holdem poker game became a very exciting game at both on land and at online casinos. It seems the enticement is also attributed to the ability to view the world series of poker and as well as to the world poker tour.

The spice of this game is the individual players will seriously compete for the total amount of the money that is contributed by the individual players which becomes the pot.
.The mechanics of the game is separated into a several hands or deals. A hand will set a showdown to each individual player and the player who have the highest hand will take the pot.

There are three levels of holdem these are the limit holdem, the no limit holdem, and the pot limit holdem. These types of holdem have different classifications.

In terms of the bet in the limit holdem, two classifications are also included which is the small bet and the big bet. Another limit is the No limit holdem this is also televised just like the regular poker tournament.

In no limit holdem the players have the rights to raise the amount over the minimum amount, and the players also have a privilege to re-raise the initial bet. And in pot limit holdem the raise is already at its maximum to size of the pot, and the amount called is also included.

Easy to Understand Rules Makes Texas Holdem so Popular

The popularity of Texas Holdem can be judged from the fact that billions of people across the world play it. If you are new to this poker game then start playing the game with the people who are willing to teach you, that’s the best way you can learn the game. This is one of the many benefits of playing online poker.

If you don’t have anyone who can take the time to teach you the rules of Texas Holdem Poker, there are a number of online sites that allow you to play free poker games, so you can play there to learn the rules on your own. Playing at those online sites will also develop various strategies.

This poker game requires a deck of standard 52 cards. Most of the Texas Holdem starts with two players on the left side of the dealer button. The dealer button rotates in the clockwise direction around the table. The players have to put their “blinds”, big or small, into the pot before cards are dealt to the players. This predetermined amount of money ensures that there should be money always in play.  The betting begins when two cards with face down are dealt to each of the player. The players are given option to raise, call or fold the bet.

After each player is given chance, the dealer discards the top card which is called burn card in such a way that no one knows which card is discarded. Now it is time to place three community cards with their face up on the center of the table which is called flop. Another round of betting starts and a total of five community cards are placed. Players now have an option to make best five-card hand using five community cards on the table and two cards in their hand.

The betting is done on flop by players. After completion of betting it’s time for dealer to burn a card (discarding a top card) and also flip one more community card which is called turn. Another round of betting is done before one final community card is flipped which is called river. Now there are five community cards and two hold cards in hands of each player, with these cards the player who makes the best combination is the winner.

The rules of Texas Holdem are so simple that anyone can understand them within no time. One of the reasons for this poker game to be so popular is that its rules are very easy to understand. People don’t have to strain their brains to remember all the rules of this poker game.

Playing 6 max SnG's

Written by Bonno

Mostly I play 6-max sng’s and because there is a lot of interest in the question: “How do I play them?” I decided to write an article about it including hand histories. I’ll also give some tips about how to play shorthanded sng’s.

Starting fase

We assume that we play a standard turbo SNG on PokerStars The blindlevels are 5 minutes and our beginstack is 1.5k. The first two levels are 10/20 and 15/30, that means that we play between 75 and 50 BB Enough room to play our game and it isn’t necessary at all to set our minds to stealing blinds. Most of the time this are the two blindlevels in which you can easily discover who the donkeys are at the table. You can recognize bad players (in general) by seeing them open huge pre-flop, limp when they have the button or play by extreme weird guidelines. Obviously you can also see who they players play their hands. Someone who slowplays a set in the starting fase will most likely also do this in the ending fase. Here is my first hand, QJs a nice hand to open while you are on the button

PokerStars Game #37804670777: Tournament #229719098, $6.00+$0.50 USD Holdem No Limit - Level I (10/20) - 2010/01/07 22:46:35 CET [2010/01/07 16:46:35 ET]

Murmel1904: folds
HERO: raises 40 to 60
Sergei-sarki: calls 50
goodguy21: folds
Seat 6: goodguy21 (big blind) folded before Flop

This is only the fourth hand in the sng so I don’t have stats or any reads. Sergei calls here in the SB It is kinda difficult to give Sergei here a good range but I try anyways. A5-AJ,22-TT(JJ+ I always see him 3bet) and suited connectors.

FLOP

4 of diamonds 7 of clubs ace of spades
Sergei-sarki: bets 100

This is an akward situation. Sergei flats preflop out of position(OOP) and donkbet almost the pot on a A rainbow flop I think it’s good to raise here because I rarely see him donkbet an entire pot, Ax is a possibility but I appear very strong by raising and he’ll fold it a lot in this fase. Pocketpairs, suited connectors could never have hit this flop because there aren’t any draws so he’ll fold So I decide to raise and it turns out good.

HERO: raises 200 to 300
Sergei-sarki: folds

Normally I play extremely tight during the beginphase, because I mainly play extremely aggressive in the push/fold fase and my image from the begin fase helps me with it. This spot was so obvious for me that I couldn’t let it get away so I discourage bluffing in the begin fase of a sng

Mid fase 25/50 and 50/100

Now there are starting to appear differences in stacksizes and mostly the field holds around 4 to 5 players. Shortstacks are getting a hard time here and that is why the push/fold game begins. It is kind of difficult to name a standard situation by push/fold because every situation is one of its own. However, there are a couple of fistrules.

The opening with 2,5 BB

I still see a lot of players opening 3 BB Personally I think this is bad and I would start from 25/50 or 50/100 by opening 2,5 BB The reason is simple, you increase your edge and edge equals money. I have written this before in my previous articles and it is extremely important. You create a big pot while that is unnecessary. Because you will appear less deepstack and less deepstack means that fishes will increase their chances of winning. As I have previously said in an HU article: if someone who just knows the rules of poker is playing HU against Phil Ivey with both 3BB then he will win a slightly bit more than 50% of the times. But opening with 2,5BB has also another reason: you’ll bring yourself in easier spots, you will commit yourself a lot less which means that you can fold more easily to a shove. You might think those 50 points... it doesn’t matter. Thats right you aren’t a bad player if you open with 3BB but by doing something simple you can raise your ROI (return of investment).

Push/Fold

Most of the time this fase occurs by the 3 last remaining players 100-200 level. I see a lot of players making the mistake that they have a small stack and still open normally. This is a bad thing. I would a fistrule: by less than 13BB it is push or fold Opening with 2,5BB while having 13BB left is a thing you could do (you don’t have to be commited yet) but your stack is way too valuable to raise/fold during that fase. When the blinds are 50/100 and you make 250 and you fold eventually that will cost you 1/6 of your stack and ofcourse 250 points. But if you double it up it’ll become 500 etc. Also you don’t want your opponents to think that you have fold equity and that they’ll reshove you lightly

Some hands:

We are down to the 3 last players and both Villians are pretty tight/solid. I have seen Murmel stealing all my BB in the last 3 SB>BB situations with a small raise

PokerStars Game #37806464313: Tournament #229719098, $6.00+$0.50 USD Holdem No Limit - Level VII (100/200) - 2010/01/07 23:19:19 CET [2010/01/07 17:19:19 ET]

HOLE CARDS
Dealt to HERO

9 of hearts 6 of hearts
residence38: folds
Murmel1904: raises 250 to 450

I do find this a good reshove spot because like I earlier said Murmel is doing this a lot and I haven’t defended my SB yet. Murmel still has got fold equity, my hand is living against a optional call and you still have to look at the stack of the other Villian, Residence. Murmel would fold sooner when he knows that there is still a shorter stack next to him who’ll get the BB in a short time and the blindlevel will become 200/400.
HERO: raises 3270 to 3720 and is all-in
Murmel1904: folds

So I shove and Murmel folds. This situation also shows why Murmel could better shove. He still has got fold equity but this spot is ideal for me to reshove and I would stack him very tight here. I have got the table under control, I am the bigstack and I wouldn’t call with just a hand, I am just saying something, like AT.

Last hand:

PokerStars Game #37806288609: Tournament #229719098, $6.00+$0.50 USD Holdem No Limit - Level VII (100/200) - 2010/01/07 23:16:10 CET [2010/01/07 17:16:10 ET]

I decide here to shove, you may wonder why? You just said that if you end up below 33BB you need to shove and you are shoving here with 18BB? You don’t need to look at that in this situation, I am the bigstack, the other stacks are both 14BB. The reason why I shove here is because I don’t think that I will get called light here. Most of the time you see that two smaller stacks are “choking” eachother to end up in the money. So I don’t think that villain would stack me here with anything below AT. And there is another reason to shove: by opening I am creating the ideal reshove spot for the two villains. I have got fold equity and I wouldn’t call light here because I have got the sng under my control and I want to keep the chiplead, both villains are tight and I will end up crippled with 4,5BB.

Eventually you’ll end up heads up Most of the time that is the 200/400 level in a 6max sng and the average will be around 11BB. The Sage System is very important here so my advise is to read that as well.

This is it for now, hope you learned something and up to my next arcticle.

Basic info about SnG's

Basic info about sng’s

The benefits and disadvantages of sng’s

Every game has its benefits and his disadvantages. The variance by sng’s is pretty high. At cashgames you are able to sit with 100BB constantly and by sng’s that is not the case. Because of that you cannot exploit your edge a lot. The result of that is that the variance will get higher. Another disadvantage is that you will need an hour (at minimum) for a sng. Most of the time a STT takes about 50 min, calculate the time which it takes to start too that and you are over an hour. You can play a cashgame for 30 minutes if you want to. Another one is that you can’t grow that much with playing sng’s. The biggest online winners are all cashgamers. Ofcourse sng’s do have their benefits. If you master a solid standard then it is quite easy to beat. You can learn this very quick and in cashgames you won’t. In cashgames you will come across a lot more difficult spots and therefore it takes more time to learn it. Most of the time the players who are good at sng’s are also good in MTT’s and also the end game of it. Sng-players are used to play with stacks who aren’t deep and therefore they are experienced in it. If you can’t decide what to play then just make some decision. Choose for the thing that pulls at you the most.

Bankroll management

A frequently asked question is: “what kind of bankroll management do I need to maintain?” If you are playing cashgames then that’s an easy question. You only have to look at the limit. If you are playing sng’s then it is a different story. You need to keep the ITMER, buy-in, if it is a turbo or not all in mind. You can imagine that you need less buy ins for a deepstack 9-players sng then for a 180 players turbo sng. If you keep yourself to the below scheme you can are able to play pretty safe.

Volume

It’s important to play with a lot of volume because the variance is high. If you beat $16 (9 players) sng’s with a ROI (return of investment) of 20% (which is good) then you still only win $3,6 for every sng you play. Assume that one sng takes about an hour you still only earn $3,6 an hour and that is not an hourly salary which will make you rich. It is important to attempt to reach the maximum from your profit(highest possible hourly salary). Let’s take another example. If you have a 15% ROI at $3,25 while playing 10 tables at the same time that will earn you more money. You, yourself need to figure out what is the highest profitable point. You need to learn to play a lot of volume, it is a process that everyone has to go through. If you are only able to play 2 tables at the same time then that is also a sign of level. You still have to think a lot about situations and that takes time. If it takes time the result is that you aren’t able to play a lot of tables. As you grow in your skill a lot more “standard situations” will occur and that allows you to play more tables. A commonly used method to play at more tables is to constantly add one table to your amount. For instance you keep yourself to it that you will add one table each week. At PokerStars you are able to choose between tiled and cascade. The benefit of tiled is that you will see a lot of showdowns and it gives you a good overview. The disadvantage of it is that you cannot play that much tables (12+). The benefit of cascade is that you are able to play a lot of tables. The disadvantage is that if you respond too late you will wind up siting out which can lead to a loss in stack and you are completely unaware of it. Also you don’t have a lot reads and it’s not the best option for a nice overviews. There is also a difference between playing constantly or playing sets. The benefit of playing sets is that you are constantly in the same fase from your sng(early stage, midstage and endgame). The disadvantage is that you are playing a lot less sng’s then if you were playing constantly. The disadvantage from playing constantly is that you are different blind levels all the time. If this doesn’t bother to you then it’s recommended to play constantly. You will play more games an hour which means that your hourly salary is also higher.

The use of Holdem Manager and PokerTracker in sng’s
HM(Holdem Manager) or PT(PokerTracker) were actually designed for cashgames. During these days it is also used in a lot in sng’s. An important thing to keep in mind is your HUD(which is aimed at cashgames). You won’t have that much on the 4bet percentage in sng’s because it is rare. Look at the VPIP and PFR percentages for a guess at the level of your opponent. A BIG disadvantage is that stats are able to deceive you. Your opponent will always play a lot more aggressively in a HU then at the beginning of a 9-max sng. 36/26 looks like a donk to you then maybe but 40 hands could possibly be played in a HU sng.

Basic info about Sit and Go
