Harrington on Holdem, part I
Strategic Play — By Dan Harrington & Bill Robertie
This is the first volume of the Harrington on Holdem trilogy. Harrington's books are widely regarded as THE definitive work on No Limit tournament poker.
The books are also a good read and very informative to those people who don't play tournaments. They are very well written with lots of examples to make them accessible to beginning players.
This first part of the series takes a closer look at the beginning of a tournament, when the blinds are low and everyone still has a large stack.
It starts off explaining the different styles of play that can be profitable in tournaments:
Conservative, Aggressive, and Super-Aggressive and tells you about the different kinds of tournaments. Next it tackles the so-called "reading" of the table and the very important patterns of betting.
The largest part of the book deals with betting pre-flop, on the flop, the turn and the river.
Harrington explains in great detail the different starting hands and when to play them, (or more importantly, when not to). He tells you how to read the structure of the flop and what it means for your hand (and again more importantly, for the possible hands of your opponents).
Value bets, continuation bets and probe bets are all explained, as well as playing a draw and going all-in.
Fun part of the book is that after each subject discussed you are presented with a few problems so you can practice what you have just learned.
Overall, we give the book an 8 out of 10!
Money & Risk
Introduction
When you want to start playing poker with real money, the first question you should ask yourself is how much money you want to put at stake. The answer to this question depends on a number of factors. The first and most obvious factor is the amount of money you have. Another factor is the reason why you want to play poker and how much you're willing to risk in connection to that. For example, if you're a beginner and you just want to play for fun, you should play with an amount that will not matter in case you would lose it. Most starting players choose an amount between $50 and $500. In case they play good and with discipline they can slowly yet steadily build their account towards a larger amount. Some players transfer their initial deposit back on their bank account once it has doubled and then continue playing with the profit made. For the good and experienced players the situation is different. They know in which poker game and limit they are able to earn the most money and they want to continue doing that. In that case a proper directive for a sufficiently large bank account is approximately two hundred times the big blind of the game they want to play. For example, if you earn the most money on $1/$2 limit Holdem tables, you need approximately 200 x $2 = $400 on your poker account to play smoothly. Everything above that you can cash out. The advantage of such a large bankroll (= amount on your poker account) is that a couple of bad sessions will not cost you your complete bankroll. In other words: You will always have enough money to play with.
Furthermore, it is advised to keep track of the performance of your poker sessions. This will make it possible for you to determine which game and limit, are most profitable for you.
Choosing your limits
It is important to start playing on tables with low limits. For one because when playing at low limits the level of players are lowest, making it the best place to practice and make a little money. You should take into account that normally the higher the limit, the better the players. Another reason is that the required bankroll is smaller. As we have explained in the above text, playing on $1/$2 limit Holdem tables already requires a bankroll of $400. Therefore, if you want to start on, for example, the $5/$10 tables you should already take along $2000 (200x$10)! This is for many beginning players way too much money. Besides that, the chance that a beginner loses all his/her money on these limits is very high, because there are better players at these tables. If you play successfully on a certain limit and you do not cash out the redundant capital, there will come a moment that your bankroll will be large enough to start playing on a higher limit. For example, imagine you started at the $0.50/$1 (in English the comma is the dot and vice versa with numbers) tables and your bankroll has grown slowly towards $500. Your bankroll is then large enough to shift towards the $1/$2 tables. However, this decision does not solely depend on the required bankroll. What matters even more is that you feel at ease to play with these limits. If you're afraid to lose money we guarantee you that it will actually happen! Playing when frightened = losing money with poker! The reason for this is that when you're afraid you will let go too many opportunities to win. In case you start playing on a higher limit and you lose a big part of your bankroll it is wise to go back to playing on a lower limit. Many players do not do this because they want to win their money back. Those are players that will ultimately lose all their money. On the other hand it is also important to not play on a limit which is too low. When you play with amounts so small that you don't care in case you would lose them, you will start playing too many hands or recklessly and lose your money as well! You need to be motivated to win at any time!
Take a break when things go wrong
No matter how good you are, there will always be days when you lose money. This is not the end of the world. It even happens to the best poker players in the world. You have to remember that it's all about your earnings in the long run. You will sometimes have periods when the cards are constantly against you. In case you have one of those days it is important to know when to stop. In general you should stop the session once you've lost fifty big blinds or more. This is a lot, especially for limit tables. Many players want to earn back their lost money on the same day no matter what. a very likely result is that they will start playing recklessly and in this manner lose their complete bankroll. So just stop playing! Remember that if you're a winning player in the long run, a session in which you lose does not matter!Tilt
Thinking that your opponents are constantly bluffing, wanting to win back your money lost on the same day no matter what, or wanting to play a hand again as soon as possible are signs that you are most likely on a tilt. To recognize this by yourself and consequently be able to end the session immediately is an essential quality needed in order to become and stay a winning player. An example of how things can go wrong is befriended player rocket_boy: He started with $50 and within a month slowly but steady grew towards $500 on his bankroll by playing good and with discipline. Then in one particular session he was very unlucky because he lost constantly on the river. His reaction was a tilt and, in an effort to win back his money, he almost lost his complete bankroll by playing too recklessly on limits which were way too high. When he eventually stopped, he was back at where he started a month earlier. The earnings of a whole month of good play gone in thirty minutes! Also never play poker if you are tired or in case you cannot keep your attention. And above all: don't ever play poker when drunk! Might be a funny idea but it's going to cost you! Professional players know that you play the best when you are fit, concentrated and motivated and thus they act accordingly. Don't give them an advantage and do the same!
Winning in the long run
In a short period of time luck is very important to be profitable when playing poker. However, in the long run luck is averaged out, separating the good players (they will win) from the bad ones (they will lose). This is something you should always remember when playing poker. Sometimes it's even stated that one bad player at a table is enough to win money, even when all the others are good players. To determine if you're a winning or a losing player it is important to keep up with data concerning your sessions. Once you played a hundred hours at a certain level, you should have a good idea of your average profit (or loss) per hour. The better you play in proportion to the other players, the sooner your hourly return is positive (perhaps you've even never had a negative return per hour at all. If you haven't made any profit after a hundred hours of playing poker then there's most likely something you're doing wrong. In that case we advice you to study the poker tips on this site once again.
No matter how much money you earn in the long run, there will always be sessions in which you lose money. This is a given fact because of the impact of luck within a short period of time. Don't let this be of any influence to you.
Limit & No-limit
The advantage of playing Limit is that, on the contrary to No-limit, the betting is always relatively low in proportion to the size of the pot. As a result, the fluctuations between plus and minus on your bankroll are in general significantly lower when playing Limit compared to No-limit. When playing No-limit it is not uncommon to lose or double all your money with just one hand, which is practically impossible when playing Limit. This is all especially the case when playing longhand (more than six people at a table). Therefore, we strongly recommend beginning players to start at the longhand Limit Holdem tables. It's more relaxed with regard to your bankroll and moreover, the risk of a tilt is smaller! To become a successful No-limit player it is important to first gain experience at the Limit tables. Furthermore, if you want to play No-limit, you have to be prepared to bet all your money on one hand, because you think that you have a more than 50% chance to win the pot. You also have to take into account that you sometimes will go all-in on an AA hand before the flop and then a player with an inferior hand will call and eventually win the pot. Because of this you have to arrange a bigger bankroll, enabling you to cover those kinds of losses in case they happen!
Remember to keep in mind that winning or loosing in one particular session does not say anything about how good you are in playing poker. It's all about the long term!
No Limit 10 players
This does not mean that you should not play these cards. You should just be way more careful after the flop. If you hit top pair, you want to get the pot immediately on the flop because you do not want to give someone else an additional draw/chance to improve his/her hand. Therefore, you should raise considerably (approximately the pot). If then someone else re-raises you should fold (except of course in case you know for sure that the person is bluffing). When playing this way you'll know immediately what you can expect.
This rule obviously does not apply if you get a top hand on the flop (for example QQ7 whereas you have AQ). In that case you should try to get as much money as possible in the pot, because the chance that you will be beaten is very small.
Hands which increase in value with respect to limit are pocket pairs (for example 88) and suited connectors (for example 76s). These hands are good to play or even to raise. In case you get an over pair or three of a kind on the flop you can raise or re-raise. In general other players do not expect these cards and therefore these hands will be very profitable when you have them. The same goes for suited connectors. These cards are also fantastic at No Limit. Imagine you have 98s and the flop hits A98. People with, for example, AK will then considerably pay out to you. Another way to win the pot is by semi-bluffing. For example you have 98 and the flop is A76. In case you would then raise, people will think you have an a and call or fold depending on their own hand. You then have a chance of winning the pot immediately on the flop (when everybody folds) or you have a draw on a hand which your opponents do not expect. In case for example a 10 and an a fall on the turn and river, people with an a might call an all-in and thus loose all their money to you. Betting when playing NL It is very important to know how much you must bet when playing no limit. The best approach is to try to win as much money as possible by loosing as little money as possible at the same time. If, for example, you think that your opponent has a draw, you should bet enough money in order to get the odds of the opponent's (trade off between how much it costs to see the next card to the chance of winning and how much the amount will be in case you win) turn bad. If the opponent then calls your bet anyway and you loose you should not worry. It will mean that the opponent will loose money to you in the long run anyway because he creates loosing odds for himself!
On the other hand you should not bet too much either, given that it will make you very vulnerable to people with a better hand. As a rule of thumb you should bet the pot in case you have a good hand (top pair or better). Do not use the bet-the-pot-anyway-easy-fast-decision button which many poker sites have. Always look very careful to what other people do at any time and do not forget to take into account the position you're in!!
Another example: You have 77 and the flop is A76. You should in that case bet the pot (approximately). The reason for this is that people who will call your bet probably have an 'a' or 'a' straight draw. By betting the pot you make the draw for your opponents too expensive with regards to the odds. People with an 'a' will probably call anyway so in this manner you will make money from players with an a and reduce risk because you've raised people with a straight draw (which is better than what you have) out of the pot.
Bluffing when playing NL In order to be able to value how effective a bluff is at a table, you should look at how frequently people show their cards after the river (the number of showdowns). a high number of showdowns in general means that bluffing will be less effective, because in that case people at the table tend to call you until the river. Consider this as a rule and take this into account before you start bluffing!
In case you're at a table where everybody constantly calls, you can earn your money by always betting the pot in case you have a good hand. In the long run that will almost automatically be profitable!

Beginner tips
1. Do not play too many hands
The most common beginner mistake is playing too many hands. check out how many starting hands other players play on the low limits. Often people get bored of the waiting for the good starting hands. As a result of this boredom, they start playing hands which they should have folded. This is absolutely not profitable in the long run! So don't ever make this mistake because it will never make you a winning player! Discipline is extremely important!2. Do not play for too much money
Play with an amount that makes sense. Do not play with an amount that will change your lifestyle in case you would lose it! When you have too much money at stake you will start playing with force and as a result you will make mistakes. This is guaranteed and NO, you are not the exception! Please believe this for your own sake! Take a small amount and start with playing on the low limits. Go only to the next step if your bankroll has grown enough. Besides, you also have to take into account that when the limits/stakes get higher, the players will be better too! For more information about money please check our article about money.3. Stop playing if you lose your cool
When playing against bad players, you will experience a considerable bad beat from time to time. This is all part of the game. Remember that in the long run you will make money from the bad players! If you are upset because you've experienced several bad beats in a row (= tilt), then take a break immediately at least for a couple of hours, or even better for the rest of the day. You would not be the first player who gets upset because of a tilt and as a result destroys its full bankroll because of very stupid betting!4. call only if you have a good draw
It is very important to always estimate the chance of winning and compare it with the betting you have to make (your betting position). In other words, you have to check the pot odds in proportion to the pot. For more about this please check our article about pot odds.5. Understand how you play
It is very important that you know why you play a hand in a certain way in a certain situation. You have to think in advance about how to play certain hands in certain situations. You have to be able to explain to yourself and others why you "checked","raised" or "folded" in a specific situation. Thinking a lot about your game and understanding why you've made the decisions you've made ensures that you will constantly improve as a player. Discuss topics about poker with your friends and visit our forum to exchange tips about poker strategy with other poker players and us.Playing poker online
Due to the enormous popularity of poker you can find a lot of poker sites on the Internet. New poker sites are arising on a weekly basis. It is sensible to start at a large site which is known as good and save. Poker sites earn their money with the rake (= a small amount taken from the pot), therefore a good reputation is extremely important for them. Sophisticated and thoroughly checked software ensures that the cards are always shared honestly and the software is also able to pick out possible cheaters.
All online poker sites mentioned on this site are safe sites. As soon as we find out that a site is not safe we will let you know immediately and we will obviously also remove the poker site in question from our list. When you start, it might be a good idea to first read our reviews of all the poker sites available and then choose a site which is appropriate for you. Please do not forget to use the offered bonuses for free, extra playing money!
When starting to play poker online you first need to download the free software from the pokersite of your choice. After that you have to choose a name under which you will play on the site (= screen name) and you have to mention your e-mail address. Once you've done this you have your own poker-account, enabling you to play poker online whenever you want!
If you like, you can choose to first start playing with fake money (= play money) to practice. When playing with "play money", you can always go back to the cashier to get some more. Poker sites always supply unlimited "play money" to practice and this is all for free! The disadvantage of playing with "play money" is that, because fake money is unlimited and free, most players play really bad and different compared to when they would play with real money. Therefore, practicing with "play money" has only limited value when it comes to preparing for the real deal.
When you have practiced enough or in case you want to start immediately with playing for real money, you have to deposit an amount on your poker-account. The easiest and fastest way to deposit money on a poker-account is by using a credit card. Besides that, many poker players also have a Neteller-account (this is an online bank account). For more information about this you can check our article on Neteller-account.
When it's your first time we recommend that you do not deposit more than $25 or $50. This is enough when you start playing at the tables with the lowest limits. We recommend you to only participate on tables with higher limits once your money (your initial deposit) has doubled and once you're used to the game!
Bonus money!!
All online poker sites mentioned on this site offer a bonus for all new players coming from Pokertips.NL. So if you go from this site to one of the online poker sites we mention and you sign up for a new poker account, that poker site will give you an additional bonus to the deposit you've made! For example, if you deposit $50 most sites will give you at least another $25 (50% extra)! You then have straight away $75 on your bankroll! Some poker sites give more bonuses than others. For more information about this please check our overview of the poker sites we recommend.
The history of Poker
Basic principle
Poker is the most famous card game in the world. There are several variations of the game, however they all operate on the same basic level: Players place wagers into a central pot, which is then awarded to them should they hold the best hand of cards at the end. This type of game is called a vying game.In 1829, an English actor by the name of Joseph Crowell reported about a type of vying game being played in the gambling houses and saloons of New Orleans. It involved 4 players betting on a deck of 20 cards, the most valuable winning. In this version of the game there was no "draw" and the range of combinations was limited. The ultimate unbeatable hand was 4 Aces, or 4 Aces and a King. This is different from the classic Poker of today, where the Royal flush can be matched with another suit.
The origin of the actual poker game
The actual poker game has since evolved from varying influences. Such as the Indian game Ganjifa, the German pochen, the Renaissance game of Primero, the English game of Bragg and even the early Persian game of As Nas. However, according to many dictionaries and game historians, the most likely origins lie with the French game Poque, as that game involved making bets and bluffing and as the word Poque itself is familiar to the word Poker. One theory is that the game of poker was developed by French settlers in New Orleans and that the southern accent anglicized the word Poque into the pronunciation of Pokuh, which then became Poker. Although Poque was originally played with 3 players and 32 cards, the game may well have been created within small communities who had knowledge already of the 20 card game (mentioned by Joseph Crowell, check previous paragraph). The earliest written reference to poker was written in 1834 by an American named Jonathan H. Green. In 1813, Jonathan was born in Lawrenceburg, Indiana and by 1829, he had ran away from his employers, been thrown in jail and picked up extensive card playing habits. He is now famously known as the "reformed gambler" significant because he was the man who made one of the first references to the card game we know today, as poker. This happened in 1834, when he mentioned the rules of a game he called "the cheating game", a game at that time played on the river boats of the Mississippi. The "cheating game" was seen to be far more legitimate than the other popular card game of that time, which was called Three Card Monte. Players seem to come back, again and again, for more of the "cheating game". Some sources claim that Jonathan also was the one who gave this "cheating game" the name Poker. Other articles do not agree with this.
By the mid 1830's, the 20 card game started losing its footing to a similar game which was being played with a full 52 card deck. This may well have been to allow for more players at the table. Eventually the 20 card game faded away. The last remnants were being noted in 1857, where the author of a New York City guidebook mentioned it as "one of the most dangerous pitfalls to be found in the city". The 20 card game did not last and only warranted the briefest of mentions in the 1845 edition of Hoyle's Games, by Henry F. Anners.
To summarize, it can thus be stated; that although the origin of the word Poker might be European, the actual game itself evolved in America. Moreover, around 1875 the European influence on poker ended anyway, because around that time "the Joker" was introduced in Europe as a wild card on the card deck. This "Joker" was not considered suitable for poker and thus a difference between American and European decks of cards appeared. The above mentioned facts however are still too little to make a proven statement about the real origins of Poker. These origins are still varied and remain very much open to debate until this day.
The different variations and their popularity
Over hundreds of years, the game has evolved to such an extent that there are now many different variations, including draw, Five Card Stud, Seven Card Stud, Texas Holdem Poker and many others. Through-out the years three games have successively dominated poker: First it was draw, then (Five & Seven Card) Stud and finally Holdem. During first centuries these games were particularly popular as limit-betting games. Each type of poker game cornered over two thirds of the market during their ascendancy.
draw was the first dominating poker game. From the time that poker appeared until some time round the 1930's, draw was far ahead in popularity. What helped draw poker to become even more popular was the development in Nevada around the beginning of the 20th century. In 1910, Nevada made it a felony to run a betting game. However, the Attorney General of California declared that draw poker was based upon skill and therefore the anti gambling laws could not stop it. Stud poker (the main threat for the popularity of draw at that time) on the other hand was still illegal as it was based solely on chance. With the help of this law, draw poker games developed and grew even more popular, compared with the other types of poker.
Then with time, Nevada legally reversed itself, which finally led to legalization of casino gambling in 1931. This new law gave new chances to (Five and Seven Card) Stud poker. It took the lead very fast, thriving in the armed forces during WWII. Stud poker kept its position until the 80s.
After that Holdem became popular. The popularity of Holdem happened together with the rise of the Nevada casino industry in the fifties and sixties. It finally took over as the most popular poker game in the 80's. Apparently the main reason why Holdem overtook Stud poker was the huge leap in status it gained through being used as the world championship game since the early 70's. It was Benny Binion, who hosted the first ever World Series of Poker, allowing entry only to the best players in the world. Benny chose Holdem as the world championship game. Costs were $10,000 to buy in and there were no betting limits. The happening was a huge success and continues to be televised today. With this Benny is considered responsible for the merging of gambling with entertainment. The huge success of Holdem's shows that Benny made an excellent choice by making Holdem the world championship game. It is therefore expected that Holdem will stay being the most popular poker game for a very long time...
Nevertheless it is interesting to speculate how different things might have been today if No-Limit Seven Card Stud poker had been invented in 1960, instead of 1998... No-limit Holdem was unknown to the vast majority (probably over 95%) of spectators and players in the early 1970's, whereas Seven card stud was by far the most popular game. At that time, Seven card stud was considered by the majority of players to be the best poker game...
The future
Nowadays the poker game has been dominated by games based on seven live cards. It has been like this for most of the century now and there is no reason to expect that this will change. Poker is carefully regulated by gambling laws and it is played more than any other card game in the world. It has grown into a sporting event, with competitions and tournaments all around the world. Regardless of level, the variety and challenge of the game and all its forms, poker will continue to have a wide appeal to players, whether as a prospect of winning money or just for fun.Poker will only become bigger and bigger and bigger...

How to play 6 max SnG's by Bonno
Mostly I play 6-max sng’s and because there is a lot of interest in the question: “How do I play them?” I decided to write an article about it including hand histories. I’ll also give some tips about how to play shorthanded sng’s.
Starting fase:
We assume that we play a standard turbo SNG on PokerStars The blindlevels are 5 minutes and our beginstack is 1.5k. The first two levels are 10/20 and 15/30, that means that we play between 75 and 50 BB. Enough room to play our game and it isn’t necessary at all to set our minds to stealing blinds. Most of the time this are the two blindlevels in which you can easily discover who the donkeys are at the table. You can recognize bad players (in general) by seeing them open huge pre-flop, limp when they have the button or play by extreme weird guidelines. Obviously you can also see who they players play their hands. Someone who slowplays a set in the starting fase will most likely also do this in the ending fase. Here is my first hand, QJs, a nice hand to open while you are on the button.

This is only the fourth hand in the sng so I don’t have stats or any reads. Sergei calls here in the SB. It is kinda difficult to give Sergei here a good range but I try anyways. A5-AJ,22-TT(JJ+ I always see him 3bet) and suited connectors.
*** FLOP *** [4d 7c As]
Sergei-sarki: bets 100
This is an awkward situation. Sergei flats preflop out of position(OOP) and donkbet almost the pot on a A rainbow flop. I think it’s good to raise here because I rarely see him donkbet an entire pot, Ax is a possibility but I appear very strong by raising and he’ll fold it a lot in this fase. Pocketpairs, suited connectors could never have hit this flop because there aren’t any draws so he’ll fold. So I decide to raise and it turns out good.
HERO: raises 200 to 300
Sergei-sarki: folds
Normally I play extremely tight during the beginfase, because I mainly play extremely aggressive in the push/fold fase and my image from the begin fase helps me with it. This spot was so obvious for me that I couldn’t let it get away so I discourage bluffing in the begin fase of a sng.
Mid fase 25/50 and 50/100
Now there are starting to appear differences in stacksizes and mostly the field holds around 4 to 5 players. Shortstacks are getting a hard time here and that is why the push/fold game begins. It is kind of difficult to name a standard situation by push/fold because every situation is one of its own. However, there are a couple of fistrules.
The opening with 2,5 BB
I still see a lot of players opening 3 BB. Personally I think this is bad and I would start from 25/50 or 50/100 by opening 2,5 BB. The reason is simple, you increase your edge and edge equals money. I have written this before in my previous articles and it is extremely important. You create a big pot while that is unnecessary. Because you will appear less deepstack and less deepstack means that fishes will increase their chances of winning. As I have previously said in an HU article: if someone who just knows the rules of poker is playing HU against Phil Ivey with both 3BB then he will win a slightly bit more than 50% of the times. But opening with 2,5BB has also another reason: you’ll bring yourself in easier spots, you will commit yourself a lot less which means that you can fold more easily to a shove. You might think those 50 points... it doesn’t matter. Thats right you aren’t a bad player if you open with 3BB but by doing something simple you can raise your ROI (return of investment).
Push/Fold
Most of the time this fase occurs by the 3 last remaining players 100-200 level. I see a lot of players making the mistake that they have a small stack and still open normally. This is a bad thing. I would a fistrule: by less than 13BB it is push or fold. Opening with 2,5BB while having 13BB left is a thing you could do (you don’t have to be commited yet) but your stack is way too valuable to raise/fold during that fase. When the blinds are 50/100 and you make 250 and you fold eventually that will cost you 1/6 of your stack and ofcourse 250 points. But if you double it up it’ll become 500 etc. Also you don’t want your opponents to think that you have fold equity and that they’ll reshove you lightly
Some hands:
We are down to the 3 last players and both Villians are pretty tight/solid. I have seen Murmel stealing all my BB in the last 3 SB>BB situations with a small raise.

I do find this a good reshove spot because like I earlier said Murmel is doing this a lot and I haven’t defended my SB yet. Murmel still has got fold equity, my hand is living against a optional call and you still have to look at the stack of the other Villian, Residence. Murmel would fold sooner when he knows that there is still a shorter stack next to him who’ll get the BB in a short time and the blindlevel will become 200/400.
HERO: raises 3270 to 3720 and is all-in

So I shove and Murmel folds. This situation also shows why Murmel could better shove. He still has got fold equity but this spot is ideal for me to reshove and I would stack him very tight here. I decide here to shove, you may wonder why? You just said that if you end up below 33BB you need to shove and you are shoving here with 18BB? You don’t need to look at that in this situation, I am the bigstack, the other stacks are both 14BB. The reason why I shove here is because I don’t think that I will get called light here. Most of the time you see that two smaller stacks are “choking” eachother to end up in the money. So I don’t think that villain would stack me here with anything below AT. And there is another reason to shove: by opening I am creating the ideal reshove spot for the two villains. I have got fold equity and I wouldn’t call light here because I have got the sng under my control and I want to keep the chiplead, both villains are tight and I will end up crippled with 4,5BB.
Eventually you’ll end up heads up. Most of the time that is the 200/400 level in a 6max sng and the average will be around 11BB. The Sage System is very important here so my advise is to read that as well.
This is it for now, hope you learned something and up to my next arcticle.
Playing 6 max SnG's
Mostly I play 6-max sng’s and because there is a lot of interest in the question: “How do I play them?” I decided to write an article about it including hand histories. I’ll also give some tips about how to play shorthanded sng’s.
Starting fase
We assume that we play a standard turbo SNG on PokerStars The blindlevels are 5 minutes and our beginstack is 1.5k. The first two levels are 10/20 and 15/30, that means that we play between 75 and 50 BB Enough room to play our game and it isn’t necessary at all to set our minds to stealing blinds. Here is my first hand, QJs a nice hand to open while you are on the buttonPokerStars Game #37804670777: Tournament #229719098, $6.00+$0.50 USD Holdem No Limit - Level I (10/20) - 2010/01/07 22:46:35 CET [2010/01/07 16:46:35 ET]

Pot Limit Omaha 6 max strategy
Introduction
A lot of poker players wonder: "How do I become a good PLO 6max player?". NL Holdem players tend to find the transition very challenging. This series is intended as a guide for these players. Some basic knowledge about NL Holdem, PLO and poker statistics is required to fully understand the concepts in this article. If you don`t know much about these subjects yet we suggest that you read the basic material on this site first.
Preflop
In PLO, position is more important than your actual hand. That doesn`t mean you should play any four off course, but the player in position controls the hand, more so than in a Holdem game. This is because much more scare cards can come down, which creates a lot of good bluff spots. As a consequence, its very important to take advantage of your position when you`re on the button (or the cut-off). But even more importantly, you should never play marginal hands out of position! Low pocket pairs, bad suited aces etc. should be folded! They look nice, but its impossible to play these type of hands out of position. Tighten up in the blinds!
Because position is so important, you should choose your seat on the table accordingly. You don`t want to have a descent player to your left. If you can`t avoid this, adjust your game by raising a tighter range and by limping the small blind. This will prevent you from getting into a lot of tricky situations when called or reraised. Against tight or weak players, you can open 40% on the button (open every double suited hand for example). Against opponents who 3bet a lot you should play tighter or limp more hands.
As opposed to NL Holdem, its hard to say what the optimal VPIP/PFR percentages are. Instead, take a look at the following guidelines:
VPIP
< 15 too tight15-25 tight
25-35 normal
35-45 loose
> 45 too loose
A VPIP outside the 15-50 range is not playable. You can (and should) play more hands compared to NL Holdem.
PFR
< 5 passive5-10 normal
10-15 loose
> 15 loose aggressive
In NL Holdem its very important that the gap between your VPIP and PFR is very small. This is not true in PLO. Some winning players hardly raise at all! Its ok to play 20/10, but 45/5 is possible as well.
Holdem Manager is currently the only software that supports Omaha. It can be purchased separately or as add-on.
3betting
You should never 3bet bluff, as your opponents will always get the odds to call your 3bet. There are three valid reasons to 3bet: value, isolation and deception.PLayers tend to disagree on whether you should 3bet out of position at all. Some say its never profitable to do so, others say you should do it a lot. In any case its better to 3bet out of position with a marginal hand than to call, as this gives you initiative.
When you`re up against a bunch of short stacks, its obviously a bad idea to 3bet other than for value.
Postflop
In general, postflop play is more difficult than in NL Holdem, because your opponents ranges are much wider. We recommend this site to get an idea of your equity in certain common postflop situations. Its very important to pay attention to the way your opponents are playing and to make notes! For example: Does the betsize correspond to the strength of the hand? Does a player bluff missed draws on the river?
You can bluff occasionally, but most of the time you should bet with the nuts and with strong nut-draws. If you have a weak draw to the nuts, you should generally call. Occasionally you should call with a very strong nut hand. Fold everything else!
Note that this means you should never draw to a non-nut hand, especially multiway!
One last bit of advice: a nut flush draw is a very strong semi-bluff hand in PLO, because you have more equity than almost any combo!
Good luck!
Basic info about SnG's
Basic info about sng’s
The benefits and disadvantages of sng’s
Every game has its benefits and his disadvantages. The variance by sng’s is pretty high. At cashgames you are able to sit with 100BB constantly and by sng’s that is not the case. Because of that you cannot exploit your edge a lot. The result of that is that the variance will get higher. Another disadvantage is that you will need an hour (at minimum) for a sng. Most of the time a STT takes about 50 min, calculate the time which it takes to start too that and you are over an hour. You can play a cashgame for 30 minutes if you want to. Another one is that you can’t grow that much with playing sng’s. The biggest online winners are all cashgamers. Ofcourse sng’s do have their benefits. If you master a solid standard then it is quite easy to beat. You can learn this very quick and in cashgames you won’t. In cashgames you will come across a lot more difficult spots and therefore it takes more time to learn it. Most of the time the players who are good at sng’s are also good in MTT’s and also the end game of it. Sng-players are used to play with stacks who aren’t deep and therefore they are experienced in it. If you can’t decide what to play then just make some decision. Choose for the thing that pulls at you the most.
Bankroll management
A frequently asked question is: “what kind of bankroll management do I need to maintain?” If you are playing cashgames then that’s an easy question. You only have to look at the limit. If you are playing sng’s then it is a different story. You need to keep the ITMER, buy-in, if it is a turbo or not all in mind. You can imagine that you need less buy ins for a deepstack 9-players sng then for a 180 players turbo sng. If you keep yourself to the below scheme you can are able to play pretty safe.
Volume
It’s important to play with a lot of volume because the variance is high. If you beat $16 (9 players) sng’s with a ROI (return of investment) of 20% (which is good) then you still only win $3,6 for every sng you play. Assume that one sng takes about an hour you still only earn $3,6 an hour and that is not an hourly salary which will make you rich. It is important to attempt to reach the maximum from your profit(highest possible hourly salary). Let’s take another example. If you have a 15% ROI at $3,25 while playing 10 tables at the same time that will earn you more money. You, yourself need to figure out what is the highest profitable point. You need to learn to play a lot of volume, it is a process that everyone has to go through. If you are only able to play 2 tables at the same time then that is also a sign of level. You still have to think a lot about situations and that takes time. If it takes time the result is that you aren’t able to play a lot of tables. As you grow in your skill a lot more “standard situations” will occur and that allows you to play more tables. A commonly used method to play at more tables is to constantly add one table to your amount. For instance you keep yourself to it that you will add one table each week. At PokerStars you are able to choose between tiled and cascade. The benefit of tiled is that you will see a lot of showdowns and it gives you a good overview. The disadvantage of it is that you cannot play that much tables (12+). The benefit of cascade is that you are able to play a lot of tables. The disadvantage is that if you respond too late you will wind up siting out which can lead to a loss in stack and you are completely unaware of it. Also you don’t have a lot reads and it’s not the best option for a nice overviews. There is also a difference between playing constantly or playing sets. The benefit of playing sets is that you are constantly in the same fase from your sng(early stage, midstage and endgame). The disadvantage is that you are playing a lot less sng’s then if you were playing constantly. The disadvantage from playing constantly is that you are different blind levels all the time. If this doesn’t bother to you then it’s recommended to play constantly. You will play more games an hour which means that your hourly salary is also higher.
The use of Holdem Manager and PokerTracker in sng’s
HM(Holdem Manager) or PT(PokerTracker) were actually designed for cashgames. During these days it is also used in a lot in sng’s. An important thing to keep in mind is your HUD(which is aimed at cashgames). You won’t have that much on the 4bet percentage in sng’s because it is rare. Look at the VPIP and PFR percentages for a guess at the level of your opponent. A BIG disadvantage is that stats are able to deceive you. Your opponent will always play a lot more aggressively in a HU then at the beginning of a 9-max sng. 36/26 looks like a donk to you then maybe but 40 hands could possibly be played in a HU sng.

Everest Poker taken over by Mangas Gaming
As part of the transaction, GigaMedia’s Everest Poker which was the official “felt” sponsor of the World Series of Poker, will join Mangas Gaming as its primary poker site.
News of the deal sent shares of GigaMedia up 9.3% to $4.12. Even with the big gains, GigaMedia’s stock is down 14% over the past month and 33% in 2009.
The companies said the 60% stake will be set at the fair market value of the business as of early 2012. Mangas agreed to make a $100 million up-front cash payment at closing and a final earn-out payment after the 2012 valuation.
GigaMedia will keep its 40% stake in the business but have an option to sell all or part of it to Mangas beginning in 2013. However, Mangas, which is the leading French sports betting and online gaming group, will have a call option to acquire the remaining stake held by GigaMedia beginning in 2015.
The companies expect the deal to close in the first quarter of 2010 when GigaMedia said it expects to book a “substantial” one-time gain on the sale.
The acquisition will bolster Mangas Gaming’s gambling portfolio, which includes BetClic, Expekt and Bet-atHome and has four million registered users in 25 countries.
"By partnering with Mangas, we can realize the full value of our poker and casino software business and share the enormous upside of this powerful combination in the large European community,” GigaMedia CEO Arthur Wang said in a statement. "This strategic alliance will create an online gambling powerhouse in Europe with top poker, sports betting and casino offerings.”

The easiest way to the WSOP ever?
Access to 88 chances to win a $1.5M WSOP package!!
Here's the deal: If you don't have a Pacific Poker account yet, then you should download a special version of the poker software that comes with a helpful bankroll management feature for free which will help you learn all there is to know about how to keep the money flowing in the right direction. How cool is that!
And it might be a good idea to start practicing because: - From the 8th of February onwards there will be 8 ways to get yourself one of the 88 WSOP tickets which could make you $1.5 million!
What's great about our offer is that anyone can win a WSOP package, from the poker pro to the complete poker novice. Existing members should not worry, there is so much to experience in the coming months. If you're curious about what's going to happen, here's your summary:
Members can win one of a massive 88 WSOP packages via their choice of no less than 8 different ways, which range from a simple status points race to a refer-a-friend route. There's a way for tournament lovers, one for those who like the occasional spin on the slots between poker games and another for the hardcore, persistent poker player.
The 8 ways:
· Persistence Pays: Race to play the most raked hands
· Race Your Way: Race to earn the most poker Status Points
· Bring Your Buddies: Refer as many friends as possible
· Social Success: For YouTube, Facebook and Twitter fans
· Cards and Coins: Race to earn the most casino and poker Status Points
· Bounty Hunter: Knock out the poker celebs or come first in one of the tourneys
· Tourney Lovers: Race to play the most tourneys with the biggest buy-ins
· One For The Ladies: Ladies only race to earn the most poker Status Points
The Social Success way gives YouTube, Facebook and Twitter fans the chance to win a package using their favourite social networking site, making it less about your skills as a poker player and more about opening the WSOP doors to everyone. (Check the tools below this article!)
After Leo Margets' success at last year's WSOP, where she won the Last Woman Standing award and finished 27th out of 6,000, pocketing over $352,000, we from pokerinfo.com are keen to encourage the ladies to play their way to the WSOP too with their One For The Ladies way.
One good hand is all it takes to knock out poker playing celebs Leo Margets and Shane Warne in the Bounty Hunter way, which also leads to the WSOP and gives you a 'practice run' before you get there.
All 8 ways give you the chance to win a WSOP package instantly. Aaand it doesn't stop here! What's nice about our promo is you also get a second chance. Players ranking up to 700th in some cases automatically qualify for a freeroll or subfreeroll where there are even more WSOP packages up for grabs.
Overall, the odds of winning a WSOP package are very very good if you join our promo at this site.
So once again for those who have not tried Pacific Poker yet:
If you want to give yourself the best chance possible of making it to the WSOP this year, get $8 free just for registering AND learn some handy tips on how to successfully manage your bankroll, then you should definitely check out pokerinfo.com's WSOP promo!

HR2267 Passes Committee 41-22-1
Rep. Bacchus has publicly argued that the legislation proposed would bring casino gambling into every house in the U.S. and urged his colleagues to not support the bill, even calling for Rep. Frank to withdraw the legislation. Despite his vehement opposition of the legislation, HR 2267 went through to the board and passed by a wide margin. While HR 2267 isn’t 100% out of the woods, it did take a major step towards regulating the Online Gambling industry in the U.S. It will now be sent to the House of Representatives, where should it pass in a majority vote, it will be passed in to the Senate for another vote, before being signed into law by the President.
Several amendments were made to HR 2267 with each amendment handled individually and voted upon by the representatives in attendance.
The first amendment was brought by Congressman Brad Sherman of California. Online sites that have intentionally broken internet gaming laws cannot get a license to conduct business in the United States. This will affect larger online poker sites such as PokerStars Full Tilt Poker, and Ultimate Bet who allowed players from the U.S. to play on their site after the UIGEA went into effect. This amendment passed.
The second amendment was brought by Congressman Peter King of New York, and prohibits sports betting, excluding horseracing. Basically the intent was to keep sports clean and away from anything that would undermine the integrity of the game. This amendment also passed.
The third amendment was brought by Congresswomen Mary Jo Kilroy of Ohio, and indicated that the Secretary of the Treasury has the power to prohibit unsolicited emails and advertisements targeted to minors and problem gamblers. This amendment also passed.
The fourth amendment was brought by Congressmen Spencer Bachus of Alabama, and Congresswoman Michele Bachmann of Minnesota. This amendment will forbid offshore sites that have illegally done business in the US, along with people who have been employed by sites that have conducted business illegally in the US, from getting a license. The intent by Bachus was to include everyone associated with illegally run online gambling sites in a ban. This amendment was contested vigorously by Rep. Frank who said that “a janitor or a restaurant worker employed inside of a brick or mortar casino would not be held responsible for the mishandlings of upper management.” The contention was that the same should hold true for an online company. Rep. Bachus withdrew the bill, then reintroduced it with language that stipulated a ban for those who “knew” they were working at an illegally-run internet site be banned from obtaining a license. The amendment was later voted on by roll-call.
The 5th amendment was from Congressman Joe Bacca from California, and allowed Indian Tribes to participate in Internet gambling. Rep. Frank quickly shot down the amendment as it wasn’t relevant to the subject.
The 6th amendment was again from Congressman Bacca, to allow states and tribes to opt-in to Internet gambling. Rep. Frank opposed this, and stated that it should be the person’s choice to gamble online, and not relegated to the state that they reside. This amendment was denied by voice vote, but later voted on by roll-call.
The 7th amendment was from Congressman John Campbell of California, and provided several criteria. 1) All facilities of licensees that operate and/or accept wagers must be located in the U.S. 2.) States and tribes must have parallel authority. 3) Bettors must be at least 21 years of age. 4) Age and residence of the bettor must be verified. 5) Odds of winning at each game must be posted online. 6) The identities of legal and illegal gambling sites must be verified by the treasury in order for banks to prohibit certain financial transactions. 7) Owners must meet licensing requirements. 8) Sites must provide loss limits for each bettor. This amendment was passed.
The 8th amendment was brought by Congressman Sherman again, and provides that States are given one full legislative session to opt out, as opposed to the original 90 day period. The amendment also passed.
The 9th amendment was brought again by Congressman John Campbell, and stated that internet sites who advertise towards minors shall have their license revoked. This amendment passed.
The 10th amendment was brought by Congressman Melissa Bean of Illinois. It states that the Treasury is required to observe internet sites and provide sanctioned fines and revoke licenses if minors are found gambling. This amendment passed.
The 11th amendment was the manager’s amendment, and brought by the majority and minority member managing the debate. It states that bets are to be made with prepaid cards and debit cards only. Bettors will be restricted from using credit cards on internet gambling sites. Also, the House Financial Services Committee will not have jurisdiction on tribal rights. The amendment passed.
The 12th amendment was brought by Congresswoman Michele Bachmann of Minnesota, and stated that internet sites would be forbidden from allowing people who are delinquent on child support payments from gambling on their sites. This was a major sticking point from states that already imposed such rules from casinos with jackpots. Violating sites would lose their license for failure to comply. This amendment also passed.
The 13th and final amendment was brought by Congressman Gary Peters of Michigan, offering State and tribal lotteries an exemption from licensing requirements as they’re already required to do that by their respective states. Thus, the Federal Government need not be involved. The amendment passed as well.
Once the passage of the final amendments were through, Rep. Bachus called for a roll call vote , and the opt-in amendment by Rep. Baca was defeated, then Bachus’ amendment was also defeated. Finally, the committee voted on the measure, approving HR 2267 by an overwhelming 41-22 vote.

Online poker to be legal in New Jersey!
This bill is part of some other ones passed recently in this state. The aim of these bills are giving some air to the state´s gambling industry, mainly Atlantic City.
Once the governor signs the bill, it will become a law and then 8.700.00. residents will be able to play online poker against each other. And hopefully, it will be the leading case for online poker legalizing in all US.
The number of people living in this state is similar to all Sweden, where the Svenska Spel is in the top 20 largest poker site in the world.
Once this bill becomes a law, non-licensed sites who offer online gambling in this state will be not allowed. In fact this will be a crime. Of course it is not clear yet how they will handle international sites operating outside the state.
There are some other states where poker legislation is pending. Like California and Florida, and some other states where live poker sector is a big business.
So good news to our US players. Looks like 2011 could be the year when onine poker is finally legal in US !
