The easiest way to the WSOP ever?

Access to 88 chances to win a $1.5M WSOP package!!

Here's the deal: If you don't have a Pacific Poker account yet, then you should download a special version of the poker software that comes with a helpful bankroll management feature for free which will help you learn all there is to know about how to keep the money flowing in the right direction. How cool is that!

And it might be a good idea to start practicing because: - From the 8th of February onwards there will be 8 ways to get yourself one of the 88 WSOP tickets which could make you $1.5 million!

What's great about our offer is that anyone can win a WSOP package, from the poker pro to the complete poker novice.  Existing members should not worry, there is so much to experience in the coming months. If you're curious about what's going to happen, here's your summary:

Members can win one of a massive 88 WSOP packages via their choice of no less than 8 different ways, which range from a simple status points race to a refer-a-friend route. There's a way for tournament lovers, one for those who like the occasional spin on the slots between poker games and another for the hardcore, persistent poker player.

The 8 ways:

·         Persistence Pays: Race to play the most raked hands

·         Race Your Way: Race to earn the most poker Status Points

·         Bring Your Buddies: Refer as many friends as possible

·         Social Success: For YouTube, Facebook and Twitter fans

·         Cards and Coins: Race to earn the most casino and poker Status Points

·         Bounty Hunter: Knock out the poker celebs or come first in one of the tourneys

·         Tourney Lovers: Race to play the most tourneys with the biggest buy-ins

·         One For The Ladies: Ladies only race to earn the most poker Status Points

The Social Success way gives YouTube, Facebook and Twitter fans the chance to win a package using their favourite social networking site, making it less about your skills as a poker player and more about opening the WSOP doors to everyone. (Check the tools below this article!)

After Leo Margets' success at last year's WSOP, where she won the Last Woman Standing award and finished 27th out of 6,000, pocketing over $352,000, we from pokerinfo.com are keen to encourage the ladies to play their way to the WSOP too with their One For The Ladies way.

One good hand is all it takes to knock out poker playing celebs Leo Margets and Shane Warne in the Bounty Hunter way, which also leads to the WSOP and gives you a 'practice run' before you get there.

All 8 ways give you the chance to win a WSOP package instantly. Aaand it doesn't stop here! What's nice about our promo is you also get a second chance. Players ranking up to 700th in some cases automatically qualify for a freeroll or subfreeroll where there are even more WSOP packages up for grabs.

Overall, the odds of winning a WSOP package are very very good if you join our promo at this site.

So once again for those who have not tried Pacific Poker yet:

If you want to give yourself the best chance possible of making it to the WSOP this year, get $8 free just for registering AND learn some handy tips on how to successfully manage your bankroll, then you should definitely check out pokerinfo.com's WSOP promo!

Oh yeah and if you make it to the finals at the WSOP and you're a member of this forum... we'll place your picture on our front page for 2 weeks That's a promise

$5 Ocean Poker buy in with $500 added!

Dear all,

Sometimes we promote a new pokerroom. We would only do this if we have good reasons for it. Here's a good reason for you: Especially and only for our community, PokerOcean has organised a $5 buy-in tournament named Duckyroll with $500 added!

This is one of our largest private buy-ins ever! So imagine, if we have 100 players then there will be 100 x $5 + $500 = $1.000 in the pot! This should be a good tournament to start the Saturday evening with. If you win you'll have a very nice budget for a night out ... or actually two nights out...

Anyway, in order to participate you'll need to download the software (don't forget to use the DUCKYOCEAN bonuscode for some additional 100% depositing bonus!!!) and then sign up for our forum. Half an hour before the tournament starts you'll get the password for this tournament in your personal mailbox when you sign in at the forum.

Click here for our review or here in order to go directly to PokerOcean.

We wish you all good luck!!

Harrington II

Harrington on Holdem, part II

The Endgame by Dan Harrington & Bill Robertie

This is the second volume of the Harrington on Holdem trilogy.

Harrington's books are widely viewed as THE definitive work on No Limit Tournament Poker.
The book is also very informative and interesting to people who don't play tournaments. The series is very well written and laced with plenty of examples, making it very understandable to beginning players.

In this second volume of the series, Harrington takes a closer look on the later stages of the tournament, when blinds are high and people are under more pressure in anticipation of a possible victory. The game that should be played then, differs from the earlier stages of the tournament.

Harrington starts with a big part of the book on bluffing and its counter play, slow playing.
Every style of play is individually discussed, because the effect can differ greatly.
Obviously the squeeze play is discussed in detail too.

The most important part of the book comes next and can be a true revelation to those players unfamiliar with the concept. Harrington explains M (the connection between the height of the blinds and the game). The different zones and how to adjust your game play to them, will make whether you will go home with nothing or win the tournament.

After this, Harrington examines playing shorthand tables and "heads up".
Playing qualification-tournaments is also looked at.

Without any doubt this is the most important poker tournament book ever written.

Overall, we give the book a 9 out of 10.

No Limit opponents

This is an article for the more experienced poker player that plays NL.

The thing is that in order to become a very good poker player, you will have to pay attention to and be aware of how your opponents are playing. Often you can get very valuable information by reading your opponent. This will give you a better base to make the right decision. Some players always play certain types of hands the same way. You can imagine that this is of very high value to know. In this way you sort of know exactly what your opponent has and it will thus enable you to make better decisions. In case you know how your opponent plays a certain type of hand in a certain manner it means you have a so called "read" or "tell" on your opponent. This article is about the "reads" and "tells" because of their huge potential.

Below we give you some of the most common valuable "reads" you can get from your opponents:

1. Opponent overplays a top pair top kicker (TPTK)

Some opponents play a TPTK as the nuts when for example they have a medium pair with an Ace kicker. This is a fantastic "read" to have because it will enable you to get the whole stack of your opponent with; for example, an over pair or three of a kind.

2. Opponent is an idiot who calls anything

It is obvious that these opponents are fantastic to play against when you have a good hand yourself. They will call almost anything anyway. Maybe be aware of the fact that you do not bluff those type of players out of the pot, although! that is very unlikely anyway.

3. Opponents who always bet low in case they have a draw

These type of opponents are very common. They make a low bet and in this manner hope to see the next card very cheap. Obviously you will not fall into this trap so you do a proper raise (size of the pot). In case they call this it means that they have paid too much money for their draw (which means you win from this person in the long run) and in case they hit the draw you just fold.

4. Opponents who make mini-raises before the flop when they have low pocket pairs, suited connectors or Axs

Some opponents raise properly with high pocket pairs and hands like ace of spadesking of clubs or ace of heartsqueen of spades, though when they have a low pocket pair, a suited connector or Axs they just do a mini-raise.

5. Opponents who first do a mini-raise and after your raise do a huge re-raise because they turn out to have a monster hand

These opponents first do a mini-raise when they have a good hand (Three of a kind), after which they do a huge raise in case you've re-raised the mini-raise. This makes it very easy for you to fold your hand. It will be the easiest way to get out as cheap as possible (in the long run).

6. Opponents who play any draw very aggressive

Some opponents play any draw as if they have a very good hand. Just keep in mind that they play more hands than they should when trying to read their hand.

7. Opponents who bet little with a marginal hand and much when they have a good hand

Also this is an ideal read to have. When these type of opponents bet low you can easily bluff them out of the pot when at the flop or the turn. However in case this type of opponent bets approximately the pot, you know he has a good hand and you can thus more easily throw away you weak hand. This is one of the reasons why it is important that your continuation of bets are always approximately the same size!

8. Opponents who always raise when being in the big blind or call when being in the small blind when everyone else folds

This is absolutely fantastic to know. Whenever you have a good hand when being in the small blind, the best thing to do is to just call, because you know that the big blind is gonna raise no matter what. You then just punish the big blind by making a proper re-raise after that.

9. Opponents who call the pot in case they have a draw and after that try to check-raise

Many opponents call a bet with the size of the pot when they have a draw at the flop, as long as the pot is not that big yet (we should do this ourselves as well). There are however also opponents who do the same at the turn when the pot is very big. These are the opponents you should cherish because they pay way too much for their draws!! The beauty is that when they hit the draw on the river they often check in order to check-re-raise you. Of course you are not that stupid so you just check which makes this a very unprofitable strategy for these type of opponents.

10. Opponents who take a very long or very short time to make their decision

In case an opponent suddenly thinks way longer than normal and decides to make a big bet you know he got his draw. In that case it is time to fold. However, when an opponent makes huge commitments very fast it is often bluff. The only thing to keep in mind is that maybe the opponent plays on multiple tables, which means he was just temporarily occupied with another table.

General

In case you can't read your opponent it is often a bad idea to call huge bets on the river with good but beatable hands, for instance in case you have a flush but a higher flush is possible. Most opponents do not make huge commitments when they do not know for sure that they have the best hand (the nuts). Also calling bets with the size of the pot when being on the river and a draw has hit is often not a good idea, unless you know for sure that the opponent likes to bluff at the river.

Good luck!!

Small Pocket pairs

How to play small pocket pairs.

You don`t call a preflop raise with a small pocket pair (PP) because you think you have the best hand preflop. You are looking to hit a set on the flop. If you don`t hit, you should usually give up. You have a 12% chance (1 in 8) to hit your set. This means that for every time you hit you miss seven times. Whether you can play a PP profitably depends on two factors: how much you have to pay to see the flop and how much you can expect to win when you hit.

If you would always stack you opponent when you hit your set, you could call up to 12% of his stack preflop to see the flop and break even in the long run (as long as you have him covered). To win money you should pay less than 12%.

Its not very realistic to assume that you will always stack your opponent when you hit your set. Let`s say an aggressive player raises 20% of his hands from the button and you call with a small PP. You hit your set, but its unlikely your opponent will have a hand strong enough to stack-off. Most of the time all you`ll win is a continuation bet. In this situation you cannot invest 12% to hit your set.

So what is a more realistic percentage that can be invested preflop? Lets make some assumptions: you`ll win his stack 15% of the time, half his stack 20% of the time, one fifth of this stack 35% of the time and nothing 30% of the time. In this case you`ll win 32% of his stack on average, which means that you can invest 4.5% preflop (32/7=4.5) to break even! To make money you`ll have to invest even less!

So far we didn't take into account the times that you miss your set but still win the pot, and the occasions that you hit but lose your stack when your opponent has a better hand. It would be very complicated to estimate the effect this has on you expected winnings so I will assume that these factors roughly cancel out in the long run.

I think its realistic to say that you can invest between 3% and 10% of your opponents stack preflop. Take the following factors into account when estimating the exact percentage that you think you can invest:

Preflop raise %

You can expect to win less money from a player who raises a lot of hands preflop as he won`t have a strong hand very often when you hit

His position

An early position raiser will have a stonger range of hands than a late position raiser, so you can call a bigger % of his stack

Your postion

If you will be out of position postflop you will earn less when you hit and also earn less when you both miss the flop

Your actual hand

Obviously a higher PP wins more money so you can call a bigger % with 88 than with 22.

The level of your opponent

You will make more money when you play against a bad opponent because they will often stack-off with mediocre hands

To summarize, you can profitably call somewhere between 3% and 10% of your opponents stack preflop. If you are almost positive that your opponent has AA or KK, you can call about 10%. If you are up against a LAG button raiser you can`t call much more than 3%. Base you`re decision on the factors I mentioned above!
Good luck!

No Limit for the advanced player

Introduction

If you've been working the low limit, No Limit (NL5-NL100) to the higher limits (NL200-NL1000), you will occasionally come to sit at tables where good tight aggressive poker play no longer works. It is time to add additional tactics to your arsenal. These tactics of course should not be applied to bad players, because they might be to your disadvantage to work. These tactics are mainly at very tight conservative players that you see at much higher limits and will help you get a few extra pots to address during your session. Apply only when players play with a big stack (100BB) and very selective in their starting hands, but poor play after the flop (weak-tight, rocks).

1. Deferred bluff

Opponent raises in MP for 3-4BB. You defend your CO / button with a suited connector, low pocket pair or AXS or something similar.
The flop is the trend of Q64, J82 or 1073.
He raises.
Normally you would now fold, but instead you just call his raise.
If he then checked on the turn, you put 2/3 of the pot in the pot, even if you have nothing.
If he raises your raise, you'll have to fold.(unless of course you've got a good hand now).
If he makes a cowardly bet, you'll have to raise to the full extent of the pot (for deployment).

2. You have a straight draw on a 2-flush flop

The flop comes and you have a straight draw, but there are also 2 cards of a kind on the flop, so you have 6 real outs. Opponent bets the pot but you have the best position.
Normally you would fold, but you're going to raise!
If he calls your bluff if there is a card of the same species, or an Ace. raise even if you get the straight. If he calls your bluff and he checked the river, put 1/3th of the pot in the pot. Don't bet if you hit the straight. If you have missed both the straight and the flush on the turn, check your bluff also narrow your cards on the river and you bet when you get the straight. If you miss all "draws" you check.

3. Keeping on the heat with AK

Preflop you raise, a flop or bet OOP BBx where B = AK broad ways and not get called

turn comes a card which doesn't make the draws and doesn't help you

Normal Play: check

The Plan

bet and fold to a raise

the actual range of hands that calls you here on the flop, esp. on a twoflush board is high. the range that calls on the turn is very low. there are a hell of a lot of "I might have the best hand and if I do not I have 2 or 4 or 5 outs to a monster" kind of hands that semi-ok players will call you with here. you very often hold a monster draw or 7-10 outs and can get most hands to fold firing two barrels. if you make your hand on the river with an a or a K, and check call a small amount. if you make the utility straight, obviously bet unless it also completes the flush, in which case check and decide how much to call.

If these tactics are properly applied at the right opponents, you'll see what your extra money will make. It is as if you have a money printing machine. Also be on the wrong application or apply on the wrong (bad) opponents leads to a counterproductive effect. Against good opponents at higher limits, the average pot is smaller, so these tactics are a good way to get a few extra jars to tackle, so you still make profits with ease.

4. Combo Draws

Something else should be a standard game is to play combo draws. Hands where you say 13-15 outs have on the flop you need to fight until the bitter end. Play these hands aggressive and reckless. You get a lot of fold equity, and if they decide to go you usually, at least have a 50% chance to win. The profit is in the fold equity, all the pots you pick up because they fold.

Preflop Chart NL 6max

Starting hands No Limit 6max, low limits (NL100 and lower)

With no raise in front of you:

UTG 55+, AQ+, AJs, KQs
MP 44+, AJ+, Ats+, KJs+
CO 22+, AT+, A9s+, T9s+, KTs+, KQ
BTN 22+, A8+, Axs, every combination 2 cards ten and higher, SC 56+
SB If everyone in front of you folds, raise all BTN hands. With one or more limpers in front of you raise 88+, AQ+, AJs+ and complete all other BTN hands.
BB raise 88+, AQ+, AJs+, check all others. If everyone folds and the SB completes you can raise all BTN hands.

If everyone has folded in front of you, you should never limp. With one or more limpers in front of you you can limp hands that play well multiway (PP, SC, Axs)

Against a raise:

3bet: JJ+, AK

call: Call any PP if the raise is less than 8% of your stack (or your opponents stack if his is smaller). AQ, AQs, AJs, KQs.

Against a raise and a reraise:

4bet: AA,KK, if your opponent is aggressive also AK/QQ.

call: Never!

If you raise yourself and someone reraises you:

4bet: AA,KK, if your opponent is aggressive also AK/QQ.

If you have position you can also call TT-QQ and AK. Always reraise AA/KK until you are all-in.

This hand selection is designed for new players who play the low limit games. It`s a pretty tight selection, which is because:

The low limit tables are crowded with loose passive calling stations. The best way to adjust to this kind of opponents is to play tight. Don`t adjust by playing loose yourself, it will cost you money!

By playing tight you avoid a lot of difficult postflop situations. This is important because new players haven`t developed their postflop skills enough to handle these situations.

Good Luck!

SnG Heads up strategy for starters

HU SNG Strategy for starters
Heads-Up poker is the most complex form of Poker. At 9-max and 6-max tables it is more likely that you will maintain certain “guide lines” to play your game. However Heads-Up depends more on reads and there aren’t that many guide lines to play with.

The Starting-phase: 50-30 BB
This is at the beginning of the SNG. Most of the time you will get an impression of your opponent during this phase. Does he or she plays a lot of hands? Are there a lot of 3-bets? Does he or she c-bets every flop? It’s important that you take the initiative in the hand. A lot of times we fold suited-connectors during a 6-max game, during a Heads-Up we standard open it. Hands like Ax, Kx, Q9 and J8 are being played the same way. Many players make the decision to bet 3 BB pre-flop. My advice is: don’t. I’d choose to make it 2 BB. We do this because we want to increase our edge. Edge basically means “how much we are better than our opponent”. If we have for instance a big edge it means we are much better. Because we have an edge we want to keep the poker as deepstack as possible. This is pure logic. If a person plays for the first time, and he or she plays against Phil Ivey and they both have 3 BB then that person would regularly win from Ivey. If that same person plays a Heads-Up SNG against Phil Ivey and they both have 1000 BB then Ivey would win almost every time, he doesn’t have to take that much risk and he could just wait and grab his chance. By opening 2BB you will keep the pots small and increase your edge. If your opponent 3-bets you, you will just lose 2 BB instead of 3 BB. That takes us to our next point. How are we supposed to play flops? In 6-max games it’s quite easy to fold bottom pairs (the lowest pair) but in a Heads-Up game it is quite a strong hand. You’ll only hit a flop 1 out of 3 times, keep this is mind. If your opponent c-bets every flop you can conclude that he has been bluffing for sure. A reaction to this could be to raise his c-bet. On the flop you should keep the pots small, just like pre-flop, bet ½ pot. You might think that if you have a strong hand that you would like to get as much value as you can? That’s right, but you can’t bet a lot if you have a strong hand and make very tiny bets when you have a weak hand. If you do this people will most likely figure out how you play and that’s just the thing that you don’t want. However you could look at this from another perspective. By betting ½ pot you are investing a small amount of chips to win relatively a lot. Your opponent won’t be able to figure out if you have a strong or a weak hand by analyzing your betting patterns.

Mid-phase 15-30BB
By the time we reach this phase we have an image of our opponent. We both have a 1500 stacksize and the blinds are 30/60, which gives us 25 BB. The difference is that from now on there will be a lot more action pre-flop and a lot less post-flop. Don’t try to look at too much flops. You only have 25 BB and there isn’t much space left to take a peak at those flops. Before you know it you’ll lose some and your stack is all messed up. During this phase you have played quite some hands with your opponent and you’ll probably have some reads as well. If you have the idea that Villian plays a lot of flops then c-bet every flop. Do you notice that Villian 3-bets a lot? Show some guts and 4-bet it (even if you have a hand which isn’t as good as his) This deters a lot.

The ending phase: 15-1BB
So this is it, the absolute endphase. Forget flops, it’s push or fold from now on. We both have a 1500 stack and the blinds are 75/150. In the begin and midphase you’ll use quite some reads but those aren’t going to help you now. You only have 10 BB left and you can’t afford to fold your button and BB 4 times in a row. If you have less than 10 BB you should always push. If you have between 11 and 15 BB then it depends on your opponents playing style. If you are playing against a loose player you can choose to push because often at a normal raise he will choose to 3-bet it. With a tight player you could try to cheaply steels his blinds.

This was my article about basic Heads-Up SNG poker. It’s extremely important to cherish your edge. You shouldn’t make weird pot bet bluffs because if you do this you are taking too much risk and you are making the pots way too big and because of this you are decreasing your edge. You are better than your opponent so why take the risk? Always keep this in mind:
Edge + Volume = $

Playing 6 max SnG's

Written by Bonno

Mostly I play 6-max sng’s and because there is a lot of interest in the question: “How do I play them?” I decided to write an article about it including hand histories. I’ll also give some tips about how to play shorthanded sng’s.

Starting fase

We assume that we play a standard turbo SNG on PokerStars The blindlevels are 5 minutes and our beginstack is 1.5k. The first two levels are 10/20 and 15/30, that means that we play between 75 and 50 BB Enough room to play our game and it isn’t necessary at all to set our minds to stealing blinds. Most of the time this are the two blindlevels in which you can easily discover who the donkeys are at the table. You can recognize bad players (in general) by seeing them open huge pre-flop, limp when they have the button or play by extreme weird guidelines. Obviously you can also see who they players play their hands. Someone who slowplays a set in the starting fase will most likely also do this in the ending fase. Here is my first hand, QJs a nice hand to open while you are on the button

PokerStars Game #37804670777: Tournament #229719098, $6.00+$0.50 USD Holdem No Limit - Level I (10/20) - 2010/01/07 22:46:35 CET [2010/01/07 16:46:35 ET]
Table '229719098 1' 6-max Seat #4 is the button
Seat 1: residence38 (1460 in chips)
Seat 2: AdKd (1590 in chips)
Seat 3: Murmel1904 (1470 in chips)
Seat 4: HERO(1470 in chips)
Seat 5: Sergei-sarki (1510 in chips)
Seat 6: goodguy21 (1500 in chips)
Sergei-sarki: posts small blind 10
goodguy21: posts big blind 20
HOLE CARDS
Dealt to HERO

queen of spades jack of spades
residence38: folds
AdKd: folds
Murmel1904: folds
HERO: raises 40 to 60
Sergei-sarki: calls 50
goodguy21: folds
Seat 6: goodguy21 (big blind) folded before Flop

This is only the fourth hand in the sng so I don’t have stats or any reads. Sergei calls here in the SB It is kinda difficult to give Sergei here a good range but I try anyways. A5-AJ,22-TT(JJ+ I always see him 3bet) and suited connectors.

FLOP

4 of diamonds 7 of clubs ace of spades
Sergei-sarki: bets 100

This is an akward situation. Sergei flats preflop out of position(OOP) and donkbet almost the pot on a A rainbow flop I think it’s good to raise here because I rarely see him donkbet an entire pot, Ax is a possibility but I appear very strong by raising and he’ll fold it a lot in this fase. Pocketpairs, suited connectors could never have hit this flop because there aren’t any draws so he’ll fold So I decide to raise and it turns out good.

HERO: raises 200 to 300
Sergei-sarki: folds

Normally I play extremely tight during the beginphase, because I mainly play extremely aggressive in the push/fold fase and my image from the begin fase helps me with it. This spot was so obvious for me that I couldn’t let it get away so I discourage bluffing in the begin fase of a sng

Mid fase 25/50 and 50/100

Now there are starting to appear differences in stacksizes and mostly the field holds around 4 to 5 players. Shortstacks are getting a hard time here and that is why the push/fold game begins. It is kind of difficult to name a standard situation by push/fold because every situation is one of its own. However, there are a couple of fistrules.

The opening with 2,5 BB

I still see a lot of players opening 3 BB Personally I think this is bad and I would start from 25/50 or 50/100 by opening 2,5 BB The reason is simple, you increase your edge and edge equals money. I have written this before in my previous articles and it is extremely important. You create a big pot while that is unnecessary. Because you will appear less deepstack and less deepstack means that fishes will increase their chances of winning. As I have previously said in an HU article: if someone who just knows the rules of poker is playing HU against Phil Ivey with both 3BB then he will win a slightly bit more than 50% of the times. But opening with 2,5BB has also another reason: you’ll bring yourself in easier spots, you will commit yourself a lot less which means that you can fold more easily to a shove. You might think those 50 points... it doesn’t matter. Thats right you aren’t a bad player if you open with 3BB but by doing something simple you can raise your ROI (return of investment).

Push/Fold

Most of the time this fase occurs by the 3 last remaining players 100-200 level. I see a lot of players making the mistake that they have a small stack and still open normally. This is a bad thing. I would a fistrule: by less than 13BB it is push or fold Opening with 2,5BB while having 13BB left is a thing you could do (you don’t have to be commited yet) but your stack is way too valuable to raise/fold during that fase. When the blinds are 50/100 and you make 250 and you fold eventually that will cost you 1/6 of your stack and ofcourse 250 points. But if you double it up it’ll become 500 etc. Also you don’t want your opponents to think that you have fold equity and that they’ll reshove you lightly

Some hands:

We are down to the 3 last players and both Villians are pretty tight/solid. I have seen Murmel stealing all my BB in the last 3 SB>BB situations with a small raise

PokerStars Game #37806464313: Tournament #229719098, $6.00+$0.50 USD Holdem No Limit - Level VII (100/200) - 2010/01/07 23:19:19 CET [2010/01/07 17:19:19 ET]

Murmel1904: raises 250 to 450

I do find this a good reshove spot because like I earlier said Murmel is doing this a lot and I haven’t defended my SB yet. Murmel still has got fold equity, my hand is living against a optional call and you still have to look at the stack of the other Villian, Residence. Murmel would fold sooner when he knows that there is still a shorter stack next to him who’ll get the BB in a short time and the blindlevel will become 200/400.
HERO: raises 3270 to 3720 and is all-in
Murmel1904: folds

So I shove and Murmel folds. This situation also shows why Murmel could better shove. He still has got fold equity but this spot is ideal for me to reshove and I would stack him very tight here. I have got the table under control, I am the bigstack and I wouldn’t call with just a hand, I am just saying something, like AT.

I decide here to shove, you may wonder why? You just said that if you end up below 33BB you need to shove and you are shoving here with 18BB? You don’t need to look at that in this situation, I am the bigstack, the other stacks are both 14BB. The reason why I shove here is because I don’t think that I will get called light here. Most of the time you see that two smaller stacks are “choking” eachother to end up in the money. So I don’t think that villain would stack me here with anything below AT. And there is another reason to shove: by opening I am creating the ideal reshove spot for the two villains. I have got fold equity and I wouldn’t call light here because I have got the sng under my control and I want to keep the chiplead, both villains are tight and I will end up crippled with 4,5BB.

Eventually you’ll end up heads up Most of the time that is the 200/400 level in a 6max sng and the average will be around 11BB. The Sage System is very important here so my advise is to read that as well.

This is it for now, hope you learned something and up to my next arcticle.

Basic info about SnG's

Basic info about sng’s

The benefits and disadvantages of sng’s

Every game has its benefits and his disadvantages. The variance by sng’s is pretty high. At cashgames you are able to sit with 100BB constantly and by sng’s that is not the case. Because of that you cannot exploit your edge a lot. The result of that is that the variance will get higher. Another disadvantage is that you will need an hour (at minimum) for a sng. Most of the time a STT takes about 50 min, calculate the time which it takes to start too that and you are over an hour. You can play a cashgame for 30 minutes if you want to. Another one is that you can’t grow that much with playing sng’s. The biggest online winners are all cashgamers. Ofcourse sng’s do have their benefits. If you master a solid standard then it is quite easy to beat. You can learn this very quick and in cashgames you won’t. In cashgames you will come across a lot more difficult spots and therefore it takes more time to learn it. Most of the time the players who are good at sng’s are also good in MTT’s and also the end game of it. Sng-players are used to play with stacks who aren’t deep and therefore they are experienced in it. If you can’t decide what to play then just make some decision. Choose for the thing that pulls at you the most.

Bankroll management

A frequently asked question is: “what kind of bankroll management do I need to maintain?” If you are playing cashgames then that’s an easy question. You only have to look at the limit. If you are playing sng’s then it is a different story. You need to keep the ITMER, buy-in, if it is a turbo or not all in mind. You can imagine that you need less buy ins for a deepstack 9-players sng then for a 180 players turbo sng. If you keep yourself to the below scheme you can are able to play pretty safe.

Volume

It’s important to play with a lot of volume because the variance is high. If you beat $16 (9 players) sng’s with a ROI (return of investment) of 20% (which is good) then you still only win $3,6 for every sng you play. Assume that one sng takes about an hour you still only earn $3,6 an hour and that is not an hourly salary which will make you rich. It is important to attempt to reach the maximum from your profit(highest possible hourly salary). Let’s take another example. If you have a 15% ROI at $3,25 while playing 10 tables at the same time that will earn you more money. You, yourself need to figure out what is the highest profitable point. You need to learn to play a lot of volume, it is a process that everyone has to go through. If you are only able to play 2 tables at the same time then that is also a sign of level. You still have to think a lot about situations and that takes time. If it takes time the result is that you aren’t able to play a lot of tables. As you grow in your skill a lot more “standard situations” will occur and that allows you to play more tables. A commonly used method to play at more tables is to constantly add one table to your amount. For instance you keep yourself to it that you will add one table each week. At PokerStars you are able to choose between tiled and cascade. The benefit of tiled is that you will see a lot of showdowns and it gives you a good overview. The disadvantage of it is that you cannot play that much tables (12+). The benefit of cascade is that you are able to play a lot of tables. The disadvantage is that if you respond too late you will wind up siting out which can lead to a loss in stack and you are completely unaware of it. Also you don’t have a lot reads and it’s not the best option for a nice overviews. There is also a difference between playing constantly or playing sets. The benefit of playing sets is that you are constantly in the same fase from your sng(early stage, midstage and endgame). The disadvantage is that you are playing a lot less sng’s then if you were playing constantly. The disadvantage from playing constantly is that you are different blind levels all the time. If this doesn’t bother to you then it’s recommended to play constantly. You will play more games an hour which means that your hourly salary is also higher.

The use of Holdem Manager and PokerTracker in sng’s
HM(Holdem Manager) or PT(PokerTracker) were actually designed for cashgames. During these days it is also used in a lot in sng’s. An important thing to keep in mind is your HUD(which is aimed at cashgames). You won’t have that much on the 4bet percentage in sng’s because it is rare. Look at the VPIP and PFR percentages for a guess at the level of your opponent. A BIG disadvantage is that stats are able to deceive you. Your opponent will always play a lot more aggressively in a HU then at the beginning of a 9-max sng. 36/26 looks like a donk to you then maybe but 40 hands could possibly be played in a HU sng.
