Calculator Manual

Step 1

Select the cards which you have in your hands and cards which are on the flop in the card table by clicking on the these cards.

Step 2

Click on the side of the table to select the range of cards which you would like to have in order to have a winning hand. In the example below, we would like to know what the odds are to get a seven on the turn or on the river.

Step 3

After the turn, you can select another card and and another range in order to calculate your odds on the river.

How to use the results

The odds of having a certain card on the turn or the river can be used to determine if you will call, fold or raise. For instance, the odds on a flush in the turn is 12% and the total amount of money on the table is 10 dollar. If then lets say you need to put in one dollar to call for this round, you should call. This because putting in another 10% of the total amount of pot money, with a 12% change of winning it, will give you benefit in the long run.

Examples III (No Limit)

Example 1
You are in early position and you get jack of diamondsjack of spades. The player before you folds. What should you do?

Answer:
You should call. Given that there are so many more players to come calling is the best to do. In case you would raise it will be very hard to fold against a reraise. In case you just call you will be able to call a (small) raise with the chance to hit three of a kind or a two pair.

Example 2
You are on the small blind and you get 3 of clubs4 of clubs. The first player (under the gun) raises 3 times the big blind and the 3 players after him call. What should you do?

Answer:
You should fold. This hand is playable on a shorthand table or heads-up. At a longhand table with so many players in the pot the chance is too large that someone else will hit a higher flush (given that he might have two cards of the same suit but higher). Besides that you might also get in trouble against someone with a low pocket pair (who flops a set).

Example 3
You are in middle position and you get ace of heartsjack of spades. The player under the gun raises to 5 times the big blind. All others fold. What should you do?

Answer
You should fold. To start with, AJ is not a very good hand in a no limit cash game! Furthermore a player in early position made a large raise which means that it is very likely that he/she has an AK or a high pocket pair. Moreover, it is also still possible that a player after you will do a re raise (especially in case you are at a table with loose aggressive players). Even if you would call and hit an Ace or Jack at the flop you could still get in trouble very easily because for example someone else has a higher kicker or an over pair. This should be an easy fold.

Example 4
You are under the gun and you get 9 of spades9 of clubs what should you do?

Answer
You should call. When being in a no limit cash game it is best with any pocket pair to just call, unless you are in a late position or when you have a high pocket pair (JJ or higher). In this case you are the first to make a decision so it is the best to just call and hope to flop a set or three of a kind. In case you decide to raise anyway you should most definitely fold when someone else makes a re raise.

Example 5
You are in the big blind and you have 7 of diamonds8 of diamonds. The player under the gun raises 4 times the big blind. All other players fold. What should you do?

Answer
In general it is best to play suited connectors in pots with many players and in which you only have to pay a fraction of the total amount in the pot. Even if you hit a good flop the chance is still too small that you will earn a significant amount. In other words, you should fold.

Example 6
You are in the small blind and you have 10 of hearts10 of diamonds. The player under the gun raises to 4 times the big blind and another player calls. What should you do?

Answer
You should call. What you want is a flop with a 10 or only low cards. Besides that in this situation it is a good thing that another player has called as well. It makes the pot bigger in case you hit a set or a three of a kind on the flop. Keep in mind that even when the flop hits only low cards you still have to be very careful'

Example 7
You are on the big blind and you get ace of spadesking of clubs. The player under the gun raises 7 times the big blind and another player re raises to 14 times the big blind. What should you do?

Answer
AK is always very hard to play against a raise and after that a re raise. First of all there is the chance that the re raiser has an AA or KK. Besides that, even if not you will still need another Ace or King on the flop in order to win. The chance for this to happen is not big enough to call (it is about 1/3 so in other words no good pot odds) so you should fold.

Example 8
You are at the button and you get 8 of clubs8 of clubs. An aggressive player in late position raises 2 times the big blind, as he has done before. What should you do?

Answer
You should raise. You have a strong hand. Besides that there is the fact that this opponent raises many hands and the fact that your hand is strong in a heads up confrontation. Therefore you should raise around 6 till 8 times the big blind.

Example 9
You are at the big blind and you get ace of spadesking of hearts. The player under the gun raises 3 times the big blind. Two other players call. All players have a stack of around 100 times the big blind. What should you do?

Answer
You should raise. a re raise of around 10 times the big blind would be the best. Both callers probably have weaker hands that AK given that they have only called. The original raiser will in most cases not have a hand as strong as yours. In case he does have an AA or KK he will most likely reraise which means you should fold. If a player calls you it means that they very likely have an AK as well or a lower pocket pair. Whatever happens after your re raise, it will give you valuable information for the next stage of playing this hand.

Example 10
You are at the button and you get ace of heartsqueen of hearts. a player in early position raises to 4 times the big blind. All other players fold. What should you do?

Answer
You should call. You have a very strong hand and you are in good position against your opponent.

No Limit 10 players

The best way to earn money with poker is by playing (good) no-limit Texas Holdem. When playing limit, good players can expect a positive result of 2-4 big blinds per hour. At no-limit this hourly return can be way higher. The reason for this is that, because you can bet all your money in one game (put all your money in one pot), bad players will loose way more heavily because of their bad game. Difference in the value of hands with respect to limit When playing NL you should play different cards before the flop. Good and reasonable hands with exception of pocket pairs and suited connectors, such as KQ and QJ decrease in value because at no-limit it is more dangerous to play them. This is because just like with playing limit, in case you get a pair with such cards on the flop, you still have a pretty big chance of losing (three of a kind, over-pair, two pair, higher kicker or draw). However, the difference to limit is that with no-limit you can then immediately lose all your money!
This does not mean that you should not play these cards. You should just be way more careful after the flop. If you hit top pair, you want to get the pot immediately on the flop because you do not want to give someone else an additional draw/chance to improve his/her hand. Therefore, you should raise considerably (approximately the pot). If then someone else re-raises you should fold (except of course in case you know for sure that the person is bluffing). When playing this way you'll know immediately what you can expect.
This rule obviously does not apply if you get a top hand on the flop (for example QQ7 whereas you have AQ). In that case you should try to get as much money as possible in the pot, because the chance that you will be beaten is very small.

Hands which increase in value with respect to limit are pocket pairs (for example 88) and suited connectors (for example 76s). These hands are good to play or even to raise. In case you get an over pair or three of a kind on the flop you can raise or re-raise. In general other players do not expect these cards and therefore these hands will be very profitable when you have them. The same goes for suited connectors. These cards are also fantastic at No Limit. Imagine you have 98s and the flop hits A98. People with, for example, AK will then considerably pay out to you. Another way to win the pot is by semi-bluffing. For example you have 98 and the flop is A76. In case you would then raise, people will think you have an a and call or fold depending on their own hand. You then have a chance of winning the pot immediately on the flop (when everybody folds) or you have a draw on a hand which your opponents do not expect. In case for example a 10 and an a fall on the turn and river, people with an a might call an all-in and thus loose all their money to you. Betting when playing NL It is very important to know how much you must bet when playing no limit. The best approach is to try to win as much money as possible by loosing as little money as possible at the same time. If, for example, you think that your opponent has a draw, you should bet enough money in order to get the odds of the opponent's (trade off between how much it costs to see the next card to the chance of winning and how much the amount will be in case you win) turn bad. If the opponent then calls your bet anyway and you loose you should not worry. It will mean that the opponent will loose money to you in the long run anyway because he creates loosing odds for himself!
On the other hand you should not bet too much either, given that it will make you very vulnerable to people with a better hand. As a rule of thumb you should bet the pot in case you have a good hand (top pair or better). Do not use the bet-the-pot-anyway-easy-fast-decision button which many poker sites have. Always look very careful to what other people do at any time and do not forget to take into account the position you're in!!

Another example: You have 77 and the flop is A76. You should in that case bet the pot (approximately). The reason for this is that people who will call your bet probably have an 'a' or 'a' straight draw. By betting the pot you make the draw for your opponents too expensive with regards to the odds. People with an 'a' will probably call anyway so in this manner you will make money from players with an a and reduce risk because you've raised people with a straight draw (which is better than what you have) out of the pot.

Bluffing when playing NL In order to be able to value how effective a bluff is at a table, you should look at how frequently people show their cards after the river (the number of showdowns). a high number of showdowns in general means that bluffing will be less effective, because in that case people at the table tend to call you until the river. Consider this as a rule and take this into account before you start bluffing!

In case you're at a table where everybody constantly calls, you can earn your money by always betting the pot in case you have a good hand. In the long run that will almost automatically be profitable!

No Limit 6 players

Introduction

These days most money is earned with playing No Limit. Good Limit players earn between 2 to 4 times the big bets per 100 hands they play, whereas Good No Limit Players earn many many times more. Therefore it is a good idea to try to become a 'Good No Limit' player. Below we lay out a basic strategy for shorthand (6 players max) Texas No Limit, which is by far the most popular No Limit poker game. After you've mastered this strategy you can expect to earn between 5 to 15 big bets per every 100 hands you play. So when playing 4 NL100 ($0.50/$1) tables at the same time, you should easily earn about $50 an hour if you follow the strategy below!

When you're a beginning player it is best to play tight aggressive, just like when playing Limit. Playing "tight" should be interpreted as playing only good hands and playing "aggressive" should be interpreted as in case you play a hand you should bet and raise a lot. Below we will explain to you how to play in order to be a good tight aggressive player at the NL6 max tables. These strategies work when playing limits of NL10 ($0.05/$0.10) to NL400 ($2/$4). When playing above NL400 the players will be better, which means that more knowledge is required, in order to still be profitable. For this we refer to our article about NL on higher limits for the more experienced players.

Once again to be sure:
a = Ace
K = King
Q = Queen
J = Jack
10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3 and 2 = speaks for itself
x = a random card
s = suited, the cards are of the same suit for example they are all diamonds

Strategy

Firstly and above all: The most important thing when playing NL, which is even way more important than when playing Limit, is that you are very much aware of your position at the table! In other words: That you are aware of when it is your turn to make a move. The button and the position before that (the cut-off) are the best positions at the table. The reason for that is because at these positions you are the last to make a decision. At the button or cut-off you will see what your opponents decide to do (fold, call or raise), before you have to decide for yourself. This gives you a superior position with respect to your opponents. in other words the button and the cut-off are the positions at the table which are by far the most profitable. This should be very clear to you! You always have to be very much aware of why these positions are extremely important at NL!

Second point is that you should NEVER EVER call when you're the first to make a decision. You should always either fold or raise. Calling is for losers! Calling when being the first to make a decision is one of the worst mistakes you can make when playing NL 6 max. Don't ever do this! raise of fold!

Button and cut-off position

When you're at the button / cut-off position you can consider yourself the bouncer of the table (J). In that position it is you who decides whether the blinds are allowed to enter the table for free or not. And why would you let them play there cards for free given that they are in a bad position? Exactly! Therefore, you should always abuse the power of the button / cut-off position and raise (just like those bouncers always abuse their position at the club ). Good tight aggressive players understand this very well and abuse the power of the button / cut-off as often as possible. a good tight aggressive player raises the following hands at the button / cut-off in case everyone before him folds: All pocket pairs, all As, all suited connectors, all high cards A10 and better like for example KJ or QJ etc. Some more experienced players even raise any Ax in case all players before him have folded.

The reasons why you should do this are because:

1. You steal the blinds in case everybody folds (in the long run this is more profitable than you think and for many players this is even a big part of their earnings).
2. In case some players call, you will play a bigger pot in a better position than the rest. Even when you hit nothing at the flop you are likely to win the pot in case you bet again (make a continuation bet).
3. In case you haven't raised (which you should have) and you hit a three of a kind (set) at the flop you will probably not win that much because the pot is still small and that is not a good thing because hands like three of a kind are of major importance for your earnings in the long run when playing NL.
4. People tend to loose all their chips (total stack) more easily when there's a bigger pot in which has been raised compared to when there's a smaller pot in which there has not been raised. When there's a bigger pot they will tend to bluff more and thus hand over their money to you.

Example 1:
The first player (under the gun) calls the big blind. All other players fold. You have 2 of spades2 of diamonds and you're on the button. What should you do?
Answer: You should raise. a raise of 4-5 times the big blind is good.

Example 2:
You're on the button and you get 4 of hearts4 of clubs. under the gun (UTG) calls the big blind, a player in middle position calls as well and the rest folds. What should you do?
Answer: raise!

In case other players call and you do a continuation bet (c-bet) you will win the pot often enough to make it profitable. You should c-bet in 75%-90% of the time. In case your opponents haven't flopped anything they will most likely fold, so when your opponent checks you should raise!!
When in position it is often a good idea to re-raise at the flop in case you have a flush draw at the turn. This is because you can then "check-behind" at the turn in order to get a free card.

So now you know what to do when you're at the button or cut-off. Being under the gun (UTG) or at middle position is a totally different story:

Under the gun (UTG)

When being UTG you should play extremely tight. You should fold suited connectors, high cards and Axs. They only thing you should raise are pocket pairs.

Actually, you should raise pocket pairs in any position. This because they have a chance of flopping such good hands (three of a kind or more) that you can almost never fold them because of their potential. So raising pocket pairs is standard! Those are the cards to play someone else broke when you hit a three of a kind. You should never call with a pocket pair! It is too obvious that a weak tight player (who thinks he/she is a tight aggressive player) has a pocket pair when he/she calls when being UTG and after that calls someone else his or her raise. That just shows the player at the UTG position has a pocket pair (which appears to be true in 95% of the occasions).
Also keep raising with a AJ or better. Folding KQ, KJ, QJ is not bad playing given that these hands are not that good in this position!

Middle position

When being in middle position (MP) you can still fold KQ, KJ or QJ though you will have to play slightly less tight. Start with raising an Axs and suited connectors now and then in order to vary your game.

When being in the blinds you should play very tight. When you call too many raises out of position you will loose money. You don't want to play pots which are too big when you're in the blinds with marginal hands. Fold suited connectors, Axs and other high cards and call any pocket pair.
And another thing: The fact that you play tight does not mean you should play like a cowardJ. In case the button/ cut-off/ or middle position raises, you can re-raise with hands like AK, AQ, JJ, 1010 etc. Re-raising with cards like these at the blinds is way better than calling which is what most other players would do. Re-raising with these hands is beginning to become more advanced poker playing so you should be very careful. Beginning players who start to re-raise often loose their stack because they play out of position and therefore do not play good enough after the flop.

Example 3:
You are in the big blind (BB) or small blind (SB) position with ace of diamondsqueen of spades. UTG calls, MP calls and button calls. What should you do?
Answer: raise. Raise 6-7 times the big blind dependant on the number of opponents. Getting the pot right now without seeing the flop is way better than checking and playing a non-raised multi way-pot.

The fact that you should raise with hands like the example above is because in that way you'll get the chance to play for big pots against players who do not have any idea about position and the advantages of it. You win their stack more often than vice versa. Also do not hesitate too much with making continuation bets (c-bets). You should do this in 75%-90% of the occasions, depending on the flop. Only in cases where more than two players call and you've totally missed the flop you can decide to fold or check and give up the pot.

Example 4:
You have ace of spades8 of spades and you're on the button. UTG calls. You raise 5 times the BB, the BB calls and so does UTG. The flop is 4 of spades8 of heartsqueen of clubs. What should you do?
Answer: you should bet 100% in case everyone else checks.

OK then, these were the basics of position playing. If you master this totally and you integrate it slowly but steady in you game, you will eventually become a winning player at the NL 6 max tables. Good luck!

Basic info about Sit and Go

The benefits and disadvantages of sng’s

Every game has its benefits and his disadvantages. The variance by sng’s is pretty high. At cashgames you are able to sit with 100BB constantly and by sng’s that is not the case. Because of that you cannot exploit your edge a lot. The result of that is that the variance will get higher. Another disadvantage is that you will need an hour (at minimum) for a sng. Most of the time a STT takes about 50 min, calculate the time which it takes to start too that and you are over an hour. You can play a cashgame for 30 minutes if you want to. Another one is that you can’t grow that much with playing sng’s. The biggest online winners are all cashgamers. Ofcourse sng’s do have their benefits. If you master a solid standard then it is quite easy to beat. You can learn this very quick and in cashgames you won’t. In cashgames you will come across a lot more difficult spots and therefore it takes more time to learn it. Most of the time the players who are good at sng’s are also good in MTT’s and also the end game of it. Sng-players are used to play with stacks who aren’t deep and therefore they are experienced in it. If you can’t decide what to play then just make some decision. Choose for the thing that pulls at you the most.

Bankroll management

A frequently asked question is: “what kind of bankroll management do I need to maintain?” If you are playing cashgames then that’s an easy question. You only have to look at the limit. If you are playing sng’s then it is a different story. You need to keep the ITMER, buy-in, if it is a turbo or not all in mind. You can imagine that you need less buy ins for a deepstack 9-players sng then for a 180 players turbo sng. If you keep yourself to the below scheme you can are able to play pretty safe.

SoortStake# buy-in Turbo# buy-in Non-TurboSTT(6-9 players)0-5.5$6545 6-11$8060 12-27$11580 28$-39$140100 40$-60$180120 61$-119$225150 18-27 players0-5.5$7050 6-11$9065 12-27$12085 28-39$150110 40-60$190140 45 players0-5.5$7550 6-11$10075 12-27$140100 28-39$180130 40-60$250175 180 players0-5.5$10075 6-11$12585 12-27$175100 28-39$250120

Volume

It’s important to play with a lot of volume because the variance is high. If you beat $16 (9 players) sng’s with a ROI (return of investment) of 20% (which is good) then you still only win $3,6 for every sng you play.
Assume that one sng takes about an hour you still only earn $3,6 an hour and that is not an hourly salary which will make you rich. It is important to attempt to reach the maximum from your profit(highest possible hourly salary). Let’s take another example. If you have a 15% ROI at $3,25 while playing 10 tables at the same time that will earn you more money. You, yourself need to figure out what is the highest profitable point. You need to learn to play a lot of volume, it is a process that everyone has to go through. If you are only able to play 2 tables at the same time then that is also a sign of level. You still have to think a lot about situations and that takes time. If it takes time the result is that you aren’t able to play a lot of tables. As you grow in your skill a lot more “standard situations” will occur and that allows you to play more tables.
A commonly used method to play at more tables is to constantly add one table to your amount. For instance you keep yourself to it that you will add one table each week. At PokerStars you are able to choose between tiled and cascade. The benefit of tiled is that you will see a lot of showdowns and it gives you a good overview. The disadvantage of it is that you cannot play that much tables (12+). The benefit of cascade is that you are able to play a lot of tables. The disadvantage is that if you respond too late you will wind up siting out which can lead to a loss in stack and you are completely unaware of it. Also you don’t have a lot reads and it’s not the best option for a nice overviews.
There is also a difference between playing constantly or playing sets. The benefit of playing sets is that you are constantly in the same fase from your sng(early stage, midstage and endgame). The disadvantage is that you are playing a lot less sng’s then if you were playing constantly. The disadvantage from playing constantly is that you are different blind levels all the time. If this doesn’t bother to you then it’s recommended to play constantly. You will play more games an hour which means that your hourly salary is also higher.

The use of Holdem Manager and PokerTracker in sng’s

HM(Holdem Manager) or PT(PokerTracker) were actually designed for cashgames. During these days it is also used in a lot in sng’s. An important thing to keep in mind is your HUD(which is aimed at cashgames). You won’t have that much on the 4bet percentage in sng’s because it is rare.

Look at the VPIP and PFR percentages for a guess at the level of your opponent. A BIG disadvantage is that stats are able to deceive you. Your opponent will always play a lot more aggressively in a HU then at the beginning of a 9-max sng. 36/26 looks like a donk to you then maybe but 40 hands could possibly be played in a HU sng.
