Make a few notes on how your opponent is playing. Because playing online does not offer you the luxury of reading your opponents' faces and looking for tells, you have to find a different way to sniff out a bluffer or someone else with a tactical style. As you're already sat at a computer, doesn't it make sense to use the software available to you?
Secondly, it is important to know when to bluff. Studies have shown that if you've been active and aggressive during the game at hand and other recent ones, you will be recognised as a "player" and someone who is more likely to bluff. Behave a little bit differently, let people see what they want to see, and then bring out your bluffs when they're feeling confident.
Finally, a trick that will be all too familiar to people who have played at a table more than a few times - chat. Around an ordinary table, this can take the form of barbs about a player's playing style and/or lack of experience. An excellent way to do it in an online game is to casually congratulate a novice player who has just won a hand due to a stroke of luck. Done correctly, this will make the opponent think he has skills – and leave him perplexed when you clean him out.
