Five card draw is a game that has been played numerous times. This fun-filled game is simple to understand. Like in other poker games here players put the ante before dealing with their cards and ensure that there indeed is money to earn.

Thereafter, each player is given five cards face-down. After the players have a look at their cards then, the betting round begins from the player who is towards the left of the dealer. Each player then chooses to replace and discard up to four out of the five cards lying in their hands. The dealer then discards the top card lying on the deck before dealing with the replacement card.

After this phase, another betting round begins again from the player lying to the left of the dealer. But after this final round, a showdown occurs in case there is more than one player left. The one with the highest hand is declared the winner and they get the winning pot.

Another variation of five card draw poker is Five Card Stud. Here except for the phase draw everything else remains the same. Five card draw is not very exciting and slick and therefore does not fit into a reality television show the way hold’em does.

The game sounds very simple, but people shy away from it because this game is all about skill – the player who is able to decide on which card to keep and which to discard can be assured of a win. A tricky game indeed!

Let us take into consideration a hand that contains spades of 7, 8, and 9, Jack of hearts and jack of diamonds. If you have the option of discarding the Jack for a straight, what will you do? You already have a guaranteed pair and you would not like to break that. The best option in this case would be to play the odds, as very often the winning hand in this game is only a high pair or an Ace. So the ideal thing to do is discard 7, 8, and 9 even if straight would have made it easy to win. You have to play hoping to get another Jack, which would take you closer to the winning pot. You could even opt to bet and bluff as you would do in the other poker games and be pleased about the fact that you are involved in playing a classic knowledgeably.
